Explore Your Roots
Use our Tartan Finder to discover your clan & tartan
Top Tips for Finding Your Tartan Think about pronunciation rather than spelling. Surnames have evolved over centuries, and standardised spelling is a relatively modern concept. Mac and Mc are simply spelling variations. Despite common belief, one isn’t exclusively Scottish and the other Irish, they’ve both been used interchangeably throughout history. Search beyond your surname. Many clans have numerous septs, associated families and alternative spellings. Searching for any of these names will help you discover your clan connections.
Look beyond the clan. You may have a connection to a district or regional tartan, instead of, or as well as, a clan tartan.
More Than Scottish Tartans While Scotland is at the heart of what we do, our collection celebrates Celtic heritage from across the world. We offer tartans representing Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man, alongside American, Canadian, Military, Commemorative and Organisational
tartans. Whether you’re celebrating your ancestry, a place you call home or an organisation you’re proud to belong to, there’s a tartan with a story to tell.
the right tartan. We also offer Ancestry, Clan & Tartan Experiences and virtual measuring appointments, as well as in-person consultations at all of our locations.

Every tartan begins with inspiration. This could be the colours of a company logo, a favourite landscape, your national heritage or simply a selection of colours with personal significance. We’ll help you explore these ideas and transform them into a considered tartan design, where every colour and stripe has a purpose.
2
The process begins with a personal consultation via video call, where you’ll meet our in-house designer and share your ideas, inspiration and vision. We’ll then create a design brief, develop a colour palette and mood board, and bring your tartan to life using specialist CAD design software.
3
You’ll have the opportunity to review the designs, discuss refinements and work collaboratively with our designer until the final design is complete. Yarn samples can then be arranged, allowing you to see how your chosen colours will look when woven.
4
We’ll then guide you through the official registration process with The Scottish Register of Tartans, part of National Records of Scotland, managing the application on your behalf.
5
Once registered, your tartan will be listed in the online database and you’ll receive an official certificate confirming your unique design.
6
But the journey doesn’t end there. Whether you’d like your tartan woven into beautiful Scottish wool fabric, printed onto a wider variety of materials, or transformed into bespoke products, our team can help bring your design to life.

Vicki’s Tartan Story Raleigh, North Carolina For Vicki, MacIntosh Hunting Modern is more than simply a tartan she loves, it represents a connection to her family history. Vicki’s grandmother, Myrtle Esther MacIntosh, was born in Kansas in 1888 and later travelled by covered wagon with her family to homestead in western Kansas. Generations later, Vicki has found her own way to celebrate that MacIntosh heritage through tartan. Vicki, her husband and their grandchildren chose MacIntosh Hunting Modern, creating coordinating pieces for the whole family and bringing their Scottish connection to life across the generations.

Melissa’s Tartan Story
Thanks for our beautiful Morgan family tartan scarves! So glad we ordered them before we came!
Clovis, California For Melissa and her family, a trip to Scotland was the perfect opportunity to celebrate their family heritage together. Before travelling, Melissa ordered Morgan Modern tartan scarves for herself, her sister and their Aunt Dee, ready to wear during their time in Scotland. The three brought their matching scarves along on their travels, including a visit to Edinburgh, creating a lovely connection between their family name and the place they had come to explore. A special keepsake from their Scottish adventure, and a little piece of their family tartan to continue wearing long after the journey home.
Molly’s Tartan Story Baltimore, Maryland
“
It was so incredibly special to wear this beautiful wrap as an homage to my Hamilton heritage on the very day that I became an Evans
”
When Molly visited our Edinburgh store, she discovered the Hamilton Green Ancient tartan and immediately fell in love with it. Later, while planning her wedding in Chicago, Molly realised the colours running through her family tartan perfectly complemented those she had chosen for the day, with her bridesmaids in dark green and the groomsmen in navy. Knowing the weather might be chilly, she chose a Hamilton Green Ancient Serape to wear over her wedding dress. It became a meaningful way to celebrate her Hamilton heritage on the day she took a new family name. Photo Credit: @moschultzphotography
