Commissioned by The Phillips Collection and first performed by Paavali Jumppanen in April 2021 at the Sunday Concerts of the Phillips Music Season, Washington, D.C., The United States.

Composer’s Note

Without a Trace is a solo work that looks at the nature still totally undefiled. Some peoples have succeeded in living from one millennium to another leaving hardly a trace on their environment, and they still possess the wisdom brought by a symbiotic relationship with nature. My work was inspired by the painting Immortal Prints (1978) by US artist Richard Pousette-Dart and the poem the herd scatters from the collection Girddán, Seivvodan (1999) by Sámi poet Nils-Aslak Valkeapää with which I associated it in my mind. In my piece, quiet, listening episodes give way to a swiftlyflowing stream gliding steadfastly through time. Without a Trace is dedicated to pianist Paavali Jumppanen and was commissioned by the US modern art museum The Phillips Collection.

Notation

! ! !Tempo markings: many factors can affect the choice of tempi, and the metronome marks shown are approximate, for guidance only. Accidentals apply throughout the bar. Tremolo should always be as dense as possible. The grace notes with a crossing line should be played before the beat. The grace notes without the crossing line should be played on the beat. When pedalling is not specified, use the pedal according the nature of the textures.

!! ! !! In the right: 5th partial in harmonics - the precise nodal points for harmonics can be indicated by affixing a tiny sliver of tape to the string. For a more beautiful resonance, the finger touching the nodal point should come off the string immediately after the key is struck.
