Jaufré learns from a travelling Pilgrim of Clémence, Countess of Tripoli and, dreaming of an idealised love, becomes obsessed with her. He journeys to meet her. Clémence has heard of the devotion of this Prince from a faraway land. Initially suspicious, she soon is haunted by dreams of her distant lover.
