Hail! Woodland violet! Why are you on the edge of the forest? Where can I grow being so small? I would be hidden by the pines and the shrubs!

This work was originally a solo piano piece commissioned by Germany’s Saarbrucke Kammerkonzertee for Ewa Kupiec – since then, it has been arranged into a string quartet for the Silesian Quartet ((Kwartet ŒlĊ lĊskii) at Katowice’s Festival of Premieres. Now, in a new version for piano quintet with optional singer, the work is transformed – the wild parts wilder and the harmony even richer. Commissioned by Pro Musica Mundi, this special arrangement is for a concert which is in part celebrating Poland’s tenure of the EU presidency, but also in memory of my father, composer Sir Andrzej Panufnik, on the 20th anniversary of his death. This piece is essentially variations on the traditional Polish folk theme “Hejze ino! Fijoâecku leœny”, with the words sung in their original rural dialect. A recurrent feature throughout is the emphasis on harmony (as in all my works) and timbre – each variation plays on these. The distinctly nocturnall Variation 1 exploits the dark and mysterious timbres of the lower piano through condensing the notes of the original melody and its accompaniment, with strings Áuttering mysteriously above. The chords move up a couple of octaves for Variation 2 and a counter-melody weaves above, through and underneath them. Variation 3 uses the theme as a bass “riff ” and takes a wilder and more melodramatic form. I invert the original theme in Variation 4 and the piece Ànishes with the opening repeated notes – hence the title – a second appearance of our opening melody and my sentiments for Poland, which I view (being half-Polish) as a “Second Home”. I would like to thank Pro Musica Mundi for giving another new life to this music and my godfather, André Drzieůyľski, for translating the words. Roxanna Panufnik Roxanna Panufnik (b. 1968) ARAM, GRSM (Hons), LRAM, studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music and, since then, has written a wide range of pieces including opera, ballet, music theatre, choral, orchestral and chamber compositions. Roxanna’s great love of world music is evident in works such as her Four World Seasons for violinist Tasmin Little, her multi-faith Warner Classics CD Love Abide, and Dance of Life: Tallinn Mass for the Tallinn Philharmonic, commissioned to celebrate Tallinn’s reign as European Capital of Culture. She is especially interested in building musical bridges between faiths and her first project in this field was the violin concerto Abraham, commissioned for Daniel Hope, incorporating Christian, Islamic and Jewish chant. This work was subsequently converted into an overture for the World Orchestra for Peace and premiered in Jerusalem in 2008 before being performed at the 2014 BBC Proms. Roxanna Panufnik (*1968) studierte Komposition an der Royal Academy of Music und hat seitdem ein breites Repertoire an Werken für Oper, Ballett und Musiktheater sowie Chor-, Orchesterwerke und Kammermusik geschaffen. Panufniks große Affinität zur Weltmusik zeigt sich in Werken wie den Four World Seasons für den Violinisten Tasmin Little, in ihrer Warner Classics CD Love Abide sowie in Dance of Life: Tallinn Mass für die Philharmonie Tallinn, ein Auftragswerk anlässlich der Ernennung Tallinns zu einer der Kulturhauptstädte Europas 2011. Es ist ihr ein besonderes Anliegen, musikalische Brücken zwischen den Religionen zu schlagen. Ihr erstes Werk zu diesem Thema war das das Violinkonzert Abraham für Daniel Hope, in dem christliche, islamische und jüdische Choräle enthalten sind. Das Werk wurde später zur Ouvertüre für das World Orchestra for Peace umgestaltet und 2008 in Jerusalem uraufgeführt. 2014 stand es auf dem Programm der BBC Proms.
