Duration (complete) c.15 minutes These settings of poems by Christina Rossetti are composed for women’s voices and intended for amateur choir. Any selection from this collection may be made, and the songs sung in any order. Conductors may use solo voices, small groups or large choirs, as they wish. If instrumental support is needed, they could be doubled by melody instruments, but keyboard (useful in rehearsal) is not suitable in performance. They may also be transposed: for example, ‘Lullaby’ could be transposed up a semitone, and violins used to play the ostinati. Programme note: These settings of seven poems by Christina Rossetti were composed in 2008; they were commissioned by MUSE, Cincinnati’s Women’s Choir, artistic director Catherine Roma, for first performance Cincinnati, November 22nd, 2008. Nicola LeFanu Nicola LeFanu (b. 1947) studied at Oxford, the Royal College of Music and Harvard. She has composed more than a hundred works, which have been widely played, broadcast and recorded. She has been commissioned by the BBC (including the Proms), by festivals, and by leading orchestras, ensembles and soloists. LeFanu has an affinity for vocal music and has composed eight operas, which have been staged in the UK, Ireland and the USA. They include Dawnpath (1977), a children’s opera, The Green Children, (1990), Light Passing (2004), Dream Hunter (2011) and Tokaido Road (2014). She is active in many aspects of the music profession; from 1994 to 2008 she was Professor of Music at the University of York, UK.
Nicola LeFanu (*1947) studierte in Oxford und London sowie an der Harvard University. Ihr Schaffen umfasst mehr als hundert Werke, die regelmäßig aufgeführt, eingespielt und im Rundfunk übertragen werden. Kompositionsaufträge erhielt sie von der BBC (u.a. für die Proms), von diversen Festivals sowie von führenden Orchestern, Ensembles und Solisten. LeFanus besonderes Interesse gilt der Vokalmusik.
