SHORT & EASY ANTHEMS ROR UPPER VOICES The New Novello Book of Short & Easy Anthems for Upper Voices offers a new and generous selection of works for all occasions and times of year – either for use as introits or communion motets – that require minimal rehearsal time. While a few of the pieces may be well-known, there are many new works in this collection, including new and engaging settings of music for the Eucharist and Evensong, such as Rupert Jeffcoat’s Missa Eudora and David Terry’s Preces and Responses. Peter Miller’s beautiful settings of the prayers before communion work equally well as alternatives to the Agnus Dei or as anthems in their own right. The works include simple unison settings, some with optional descants. Most of the pieces can be performed with a certain amount of flexible scoring. DAVID WORDSWORTH worked as a music teacher and in music publishing before devoting his time to choral music. He has conducted and given workshops in many parts of Europe, as well as in Cuba and the Philippines, and has held residencies at over a dozen US universities. David has been Music Director of the Addison Singers since 1995, leading their regular London concert season as well as performances in France, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Scotland, Spain, the USA and Austria. He is Artistic Director of Singing Shakespeare, a celebration of choral settings of the Bard supported by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

SERGEI RACHMANINOFF RACHMANINOFF’S music for the All-Night Vigil service – long known inaccurately as his ‘Vespers’ – is a masterpiece in its own right. It draws on centuries-old Orthodox chant and the performance tradition of Russian folk music, and embodies the ideal of Russian church music championed by a group of Moscow musicians of the time. In this All-Night Vigil the great composer-pianist-conductor has allied his own imagination, skill and experience with the expertise built up at the Synodal School of Church Music – not least by its choir, which gave the first performances at several Moscow concerts. For the first time an audio pronunciation guide – indispensable for choirs wishing to perform this most beautiful of masterpieces – is available online. STUART CAMPBELL has contributed articles on Russian music to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (second edition) and Die neue MGG. Cambridge University Press published two volumes of his anthology of criticism entitled Russians on Russian Music. He is a tutor for the adult-education units of the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and joint musical director (with Svetlana Zvereva) of the chamber choir Russkaya Cappella. JOHN MCCABE 1939-2015 The distinguished composer and pianist JOHN MCCABE, who died earlier this year, left a broad oeuvre of choral works setting a variety of texts, including anonymous 16th century Latin, Henry Vaughan, Herman Melville, Thomas Hardy, James Clarence Mangan, Reyner Banham and Jo Shapcott.

Works including McCabe’s major Mangan Triptych, three Marian Carols, The Lily-White Rose, and various other sacred and secular works, such as The last and greatest Herald, written for St John’s College, Cambridge, in 2008, and selected for inclusion in The Choirbook for the Queen published to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II, were recorded by the BBC Singers on the disc Visions on the Naxos label. JAMES WHITBOURN JAMES WHITBOURN is a versatile composer with an international reputation for choral music, music for film, television and concert hall. His largest composition to date is Annelies, a concert-length choral setting of passages from The Diary of Anne Frank. It was premiered under the direction of Leonard Slatkin at London’s Cadogan Hall in 2005.
The Choral Collection is a richly diverse collection of fifteen short choral works drawn from the first years of the twenty-first century. The pieces represent some of the many fruitful relationships during that period, stemming from collaborations with the likes of King’s College, Cambridge, Desmond Tutu, Robert Tear, and the BBC. The works in the collection can be performed by either small or large ensembles. NEW WORKS FROM NICO MUHLY NICO MUHLY (b. 1981) calls choral music his first love, stating, “I still return to the emotional landscapes of Byrd, Tallis, Gibbons, Howells and Britten as a sort of home base for all of the music I write.� That love has led him to create a rich and varied catalogue, including secular and sacred music performed and recorded by choral ensembles such as the Los Angeles Master Chorale, The Choir of St Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Cantus, and The Choirs of Clare and St John’s Colleges, Cambridge, among others. From large ensemble works (Like as the hart, Expecting the Main Things from You) to chamber works (How Soon, A New Song, My Days), Muhly’s passion for choral music comes through in his lush, complex works that are in demand by amateur and professional ensembles throughout the world.

INTRODUCING OWAIN PARK OWAIN PARK’S music has been performed internationally, by ensembles including the Tallis Scholars, the Aurora Orchestra and the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir. Recent works include Beati quorum via commissioned by the Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust for The Countess of Wessex, and Shakespeare Songs of Night-Time for the Holst Singers. Judas mercator pessimus was included by The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge in their tour programme to Canada. His compositions have won awards from organisations including the NCEM, and his music has been broadcast on BBC Radios 3 and 4, and Classic FM. Owain is also a conductor, singer and organist. He conducts The Gesualdo Six, a male-voice ensemble specialising in early music, also performing works as diverse as Ligeti’s Nonsense Madrigals. DOMINICK DIORIO Conductor and composer DOMINICK DIORIO is assistant professor of choral conducting at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he directs NOTUS: IU Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, an auditioned chorus specializing in music of the last fifty years. He supervises the masters programme in choral conducting and also teaches courses in score reading, choral literature, graduate choral conducting, and the doctoral choral seminar. Called “a forward-thinking young composer filled with new ideas, ready to tackle anything”, DiOrio was recently named Best Composer 2011 by Houston Press for Klytemnestra, his new opera with Divergence Vocal Theater. His second opera, The Little Blue One with librettist Meghan Guidry, was premiered in Boston with Juventas New Music Ensemble and musical director Lidiya Yankovskaya. He has been awarded prizes in composition from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and the American Choral Directors Association; as well as from Boston Metro Opera, the Yale Glee Club, the Young New Yorker’s Chorus and the Cantate Chamber Singers.
