High harmonics may be taken either at the scroll or near the bridge. There is a frequent motive of a harmonic glissando to the ninth harmonic. Players should direct the motive to this harmonic, ensuring that it sounds clearly.
Quartertones should be fingered, not rolled, wherever possible.
Wind-blown Seeds was composed for the Arcos Orchestra and their director, John-Edward Kelly. It is in one continuous movement lasting around 14 minutes. The music grows from and around a chorale, which is mainly carried by the violas; as it expands in register it gradually moves into the rest of the orchestra until, in the coda, it evaporates and is only a memory.
The title comes from a poem by the Irish poet Kerry Hardie, which inspired my musical ideas. It is a poem about emigration, addressed to her brother in Brooklyn; but her imagery is of the French Huguenots who came to Ireland (as my ancestors did) bringing with them the seeds of their native flora. Scattered along the way, the blooms remind us of all diasporas; of loss and displacement for some, fruitful assimilation for others.
