2 Triangles 2 Slapsticks 2 Metal Guiros Clash Cymbals Marching Snare Drum
Percussion Notes Percussion 1 Main Station Marimba Glockenspiel 1 Bass Drum (shared with Percussion 3) The bass drum should ideally be situated a good distance away from the Timpani Tambourine 2 (N.B. the above instruments need to be close to each other, due to quick instrument changes) Trench Whistle 1 (a reproduction Acme Metropolitan British Police Whistle, Model No. 15 made by J. Hudson and Co. Ltd) (used in two locations: it may be easiest to use two whistles, one with main percussion instruments and one at Gravel Box station). Wood Block 1* Snare Drum 1 (snares on throughout) Lion's Roar 1** Gravel Box Station (N.B. Percussionists 1, 2 & 3 need to wear appropriate footwear) Gravel Box 1*** Trench Whistle 1 (see above)
Percussion 2 Main Station Glockenspiel 2 Snare Drum 2 (snares on throughout) Tam-tam, medium size (shared with Percussion 4. (normal mallets, triangle beater and superball mallets used) Woodblock 2* Trench Whistle 2 (as above) Lion's Roar 2** Gravel Box Station Gravel Box 2*** Maracas (2, as close in pitch to the Gravel Box as possible) Marching Snare Drum (on strap)
Percussion 3 Main Station Tubular Bells (shared with Percussion 4) Xylophone (shared with Percussion 4) Triangle Bass Drum (shared with Percussion 1) Woodblock 3* Trench Whistle 3 Snare Drum 3 (snares on throughout) with sticks and brushes Lion's Roar 3** Gravel Box Station Gravel Box 3*** Slapstick 1*
Percussion 4
N.B. Gravel Box Stations should be visibly separate from other percussion and aligned in a row of three (they should look 'regimented') and perhaps on a platform. The four snare drums (not including the Marching Snare Drum) should be placed equidistance apart, similarly to have a regimented, military look on stage. Snare Drum 1 and 4 should be as near to each side of the stage as possible. Wood blocks and Lion's Roars should be placed alongside them. When playing between Figures LL - OO, the four percussionists should aim to be as similar in their actions as possible. E.g. Lion's Roars should be placed in identical positions relative to the snare drums and played in the identical way (perhaps with the Lion's Roars on the floor, or mounted on stands, with the frictions strings pulled in the same direction. It should look militaristic, machinelike - as if pushing ammunition into heavy artillery.
Triangle Metal Guiro with triangle beater (ideally the LP Latin Percussion Merengue Guiro (measuring 12.5 inches): stuff with bubble wrap if too resonant (sound should be dry.) N.B. a second identical guiro and triangle beater is needed for the Baritone at figure KK. Clash Cymbals Tambourine 2 Artillery Whistle (a reproduction Acme No. 58 Artillery Officers Whistle made by J. Hudson and Co. Ltd, any year/finish) Slapstick 2 Tam-tam (shared with Percussion 2) Xylophone (shared with Percussion 3) Woodblock 4* Trench Whistle 4 Snare Drum 4 (snares on throughout) Lion's Roar 4** Tubular Bells (shared with Percussion 3) *All Wood blocks should be identical if possible. ** Lion's Roars should all sound slightly different ideally, but at least two (P. 1 and P. 4's) should be as big as possible. *** Gravel Boxes ideally made from wood (wide, shallow boxes ideally minimum dimensions 24 inches squared with a depth of about 10 inches) filled with 10mm gravel (smallest size available). Approximately 2 small bags of gravel available from most DIY stores, with a coverage of 0.5m2 x D 50mm per bag would be ideal per gravel box. Alternatively, it might be possible to use old suitcases, but wood should be more resonant. N.B. only one triangle and one tambourine is ever needed at once, but it may be easier to have duplicates as listed above.
TEXT I.
III.
In Flanders fields
The day we enlisted,
Where Poppies grow
My pals and I,
Between the headstones,
The sun smiled
Row on row,
In a cloudless sky.
I stumble through the scarlet snow
We marched away to fight the Hun
In search of friends I used to know.
With flags and banners,
Before my burning eyes,
Trumpet, drum.
A stolen generation lies
Lads who meant the world to me;
Of boys whose lives were thrown away
Cooper HP, White KT,
By those who played
Evans AG, Clarke JO –
At genocide
Ginger, Chalky, Taff and Joe.
And burned the world to ash
Hearts proud, heads high,
For pride.
Joining in the battle cry:
And as I wander to and fro,
‘God for Empire, England
Around my feet
And King George’.
The poppies blow.
And the Band played ‘Tipperary’ As the soldiers waved goodbye.
II.
We’d have the Kaiser on the run
Poppies.
Before the year was done,
Bloodstained.
And then return.
Black-hearted.
Well, we were young
Blasted from the
And we would learn.
Battered earth. Roots writhing Through the bones Of broken men. Each bloom a wound, Torn round a sooty core. The blazing echo of a shot. A flaming red forget-me-not.
IV.
The pearls and corals
Training camp,
In its shell-strewn pools
A no-man’s land.
Not gems,
Men herded in from far and wide:
But scattered teeth and bones
Tinkers, tailors,
Of nameless soldiers
Soldiers, sailors,
Come to dust.
Rich men, poor men, side by side.
Charred tree stumps
Form fours, right turn.
Point towards the skies,
Clean your boots and shine your brass.
Their birdless branches
Learn to shoot and march in time.
Mute beneath the thundering guns.
Kiss the colonel on his a – (rse).
Fierce forests of ferocious wire
Watson RF, Taylor B,
Grasp their flapping prey.
Green AR and Richards P,
The setting sun incarnadines the land,
Answering our country’s call.
As though the soil itself were weeping blood.
All for one and one for all.
It is not Nor it cannot come
V. To France at last To do our part, Mustard-keen to make a start. Tramping mile on endless mile Hoist your packs And smile, boys, smile On through green and pleasant lands, The fate of nations in our hands. But as we near the battlefields, The rolling landscape yields To regions wrecked by shot and shell A world that war has blown to hell.
VI. An earthen ocean, Floods the horizon.
To good.
VII.
And the hungry roar of guns
A rude awakening
Blur day and night to one.
From foolish dreams of glory.
And this is hell,
No Camelot lies waiting here
And we are here.
Amid the death and grief and fear,
[Because we’re here
Where every man must take his chance,
Because we’re here
Fall in and join the fatal dance.
Because we’re here...]
And the days pass, And the weeks pass
IX.
And there’s nothing to do
At last,
But sit on your arse
The long-awaited news.
And fire at the whites of Jerry’s eyes
A massed attack along the front
And live with the stink
To end this state
And the mud and the flies.
Of stalemate
And each day,
And win the war.
A little bit more of you
Old hands shrug -
Dies.
They’ve heard it all before But Johnny Raws are mad
VIII.
To show our stuff.
A timeless, twilight world,
Our day of reckoning
Smoke-choked,
Can’t come soon enough.
Rain-soaked, Where rats As big as cats grow fat On the flesh Of fallen friends, And lice feast on the sluggish blood Of those men left alive. Eyes that sparkled yesterday Stare sightless from Bomb-blasted holes. Trench walls run with blood. The flash of shellfire
X.
Chalky? Taff?
Dawn light
Somebody
Slides across the trench.
Answer me!
The air is thick
Watson? Taylor?
With cigarettes
Richards? Green?
And petrol-tainted tea.
Can anybody hear?
The guns have fallen silent
Is anybody there?
And in the unfamiliar quiet
Lads? Lads?
I can hear
Hello?
A blackbird singing
Oh, Please, God
Somewhere near.
No...
My senses sharp in the morning air, I am aware
XIII.
Of every little movement in the ranks.
I cannot speak
A sergeant coughs.
Of what I saw
The rum can clanks.
When we were ordered
Men smoke, and joke,
To withdraw.
And pray, and cry,
Of the countless men
And steel themselves to do or die.
In that attack,
Then Zero hour,
Pitifully few came back.
Whistles blow,
Chalky, Ginger, Taff and Joe -
And over the top
Wiped out at a single blow.
The Tommies go...
Watson, Richards, Taylor, Green,
Right lads - CHARGE!
Unrecongnisable,
God Save the King!
Obscene. Rank on rank
XI.
Shelled and shot,
Over the Top (Orchestral)
And for what? For what?
XII. Hello? Hello? Ginger? Joe?
XIV.
XV.
Next day
In Flanders fields
It begins again.
Where Poppies grow
As up the line march
Between the headstones,
More young men,
Row on row,
Replacing those
A blackbird sings from nearby trees
Who’ve gone before -
As they dance gently in the breeze.
Fresh meat to feed
I kept my word,
This bloody war.
I came to find
And so it will go
The fallen friends I left behind.
On and on,
Now I know where they lie.
Until at last
I’ve said my last goodbye.
The job is done.
And as I turn away to go, Around my feet The poppies blow. Tamsin Collison

When this bloody war is over, Oh, how happy I will be; When I get my civvy clothes on, No more soldiering for me. (What a friend we have in Jesus! All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry, every thing to God in prayer. )

Put on WW1 military jacket and button it up, transforming appearance into that of a WW1 Tommy. Other actions, like signing a sheet on a clipboard (perhaps handed over by the leader the orchestra) and being given a shilling in return, smiling and waving at the crowds (particularly the admiring ladies) could happen during the following orchestral interlude. The jacket should have been kept out of view until now (perhaps hidden behind the conductors rostrum).
