Followers 1.1 Arrival The audience assembles outside the Organ Room. From inside the Organ Room, the sound of EURYDICE warming up is heard. As the audience are gathering, the musicians come through and enter one at a time.

ORPHEUS comes out to greet the audience (who in Part One should feel they are members of the Archduke's court). He asks the ushers whether there is any word on when the Archduke will arrive. He distributes playbills, which describe 'a command performance for the Archduke' featuring an instrumental Dance of the Graces and the first performance of a scene from a new Opera.
At some point during this, one of the musicians could engage ORPHEUS in a brief discussion about the score; e.g. ORPHEUS stops the musician on his/her way in to give a note from rehearsals; or the musician comes back out from the Organ Room carrying a score to ask ORPHEUS a question. An usher informs ORPHEUS that the Archduke is now approaching. He goes back into the Organ Room. The audience are also ushered in to take their places.
EURYDICE and the clarinet and 'cello players are up in the balcony as the audience enter. In everything that follows, the balcony is the 'Green Room', with a 'fourth wall' dividing it from the main space. The people there cannot see what is going on in the main space, although they can hear some things - as one might backstage .
