Duration: c.25 minutes
Programme Note Cantos de Sonho (2013) deploys soprano, tenor and piano trio in an exploration of six poems by Alexander Search, which centre on images of sleep and dreams. Though essentially abstract in design, the work is notionally mapped out across a troubled night of sleep, framed by a serenade (‘To one playing’) and a final aubade (‘Souvenir’). Cantos de Sonho (‘Songs of Sleep’) is more lyric dialogue than song cycle – a dialogue between soprano and tenor, between voices and instruments and between ‘text’ and ‘musical response’. It is predominantly reflective and elusive in tone – a quality reinforced by its poetic starting point: ‘Alexander Search’ was just one of the over 70 heteronyms, or alter egos, of the great Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935). Cantos de Sonho is dedicated to Ricardo da Silva Esteves.
Commissioned for the 2013 Ludlow Weekend of English Song with funds provided by Finzi Friends and specifically by John Crumlish, Richard Hall, John Sammons and Adrian and Norma Williams. First performance on 2 June 2013 at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms, Ludlow, Shropshire, UK given by Rowan Pierce (soprano), Nicholas Mulroy (tenor), Matthew Denton (violin), Emma Denton (cello) and Gavin Roberts (piano), as part of the Ludlow English Song Weekend 2013.

VI. SOUVENIR How sweetly sad it is sometimes to hear Some old loved sound to memory recalled, To see, as if in dreams, some old dear face, Some landscape’s stretch, some field, some dale, some stream, A memory so sudden, sad and pleasant, Aught that recalls the days of happy youth. Then spring in happy pain the tears that wait, Those subtle tears that wait on thought, and all — Field, stream and voice — all that we hear or see — Goes from the sense, adorned with mem’ry’s hand And merges slowly into dreamy light. I wake; alas! by dreams I was betrayed. ’Tis but a semblance that I feel and hear Because the past, alas! cannot return.
