A FEW WORDS CONCERNING TOKYO-CITY Following Satori (1998) and Jardin Zen (1999), Tokyo-City is the third work I have composed to express the various emotions I have felt during my trips to Japan. With Tokyo-City for piano, the point is not so much to describe this capital, but to convey the metaphorical experience of a foreigner initially lost in this immense city, and then little by little engulfed in the extraordinary energy which it radiates. I also wanted to express the sensations of harmony and colour which I felt over the course of my long walks through the city. The general concept of Tokyo-City is based on the idea of a musical trajectory developed around a counterpoint which gradually transforms and unfolds in a purely harmonic space according to the principle of anamorphosis. The whole work is constructed without interruption in a single, large movement, in a formal envelope whose axis of symmetry is close to the golden section. The symmetry concerns both the tempo and the inversion of the register. The beginning of Tokyo-City is mysterious and enigmatic, arising from the extreme low register of the piano, in a very slow tightly-woven three-part counterpoint. Then, very gradually, the tempo accelerates, together with the emergence of a “floating polyphony” which slowly makes its way to the medium register. In this way, a musical figure is imperceptibly revealed which transforms itself gradually into an obsessive “canonic toccata”. In an immense “rallentando” which mirrors the beginning of the work, this toccata very slowly loses its form, leaving in its wake a more and more harmonic universe – with some of these harmonies having a crystalline brilliance. The work ends in a very spare way, in the extreme high register of the piano.

COMMENTS REGARDING NOTATION Generally speaking, the score is notated on 1, 2, 3 or 4 staves; this is to take into account the nature of the writing – which at times employs more than 7 octaves – as a graphic representation of the continuity of the piano’s chromatic scale. One of the difficulties of this score is the way the transitions must be handled – specifically from bar 45 to 60 and from bar 86 to 93. In these two passages, the slow evolution of the sound texture must be coordinated with the very progressive acceleration, then with the slowing down of the tempo, so that the anamorphic processes are not disturbed. • The first 45 bars of the score are written in 3-part counterpoint with a symbolic notation (this notation indicates no fixed rhythmic values): – 1st voice: quarter-notes, stems up, with a continuous wavy beam. – 2nd voice: whole-notes. – 3rd voice: quarter-notes, stems down, with a continuous wavy beam. Each voice must be played “legato”, the notes tenuto, without using the right pedal. From bar 31 to 45, a 4th voice, noted with “white rectangles” is added to the polyphony. The first 33 bars are written in proportional graphic notation. Respect the position of each note in the staff and the tenuto of each voice of the counterpoint. • Page 4, from bar 34 to 45, due to the very gradual acceleration of the tempo, the notation is no longer proportional. – continue to play as before (in continuous rubato) following the accelerando – pay careful attention to the tenuto notes in each voice – avoid regular rhythms. The performer must create his own rhythmic phrasing. • Page 5, bar 46, the very progressive acceleration of the tempo now causes the fusion of voices 1, 2 and 3 into a single, unique voice played “legato”. In this passage, the slight “pedal tremolo” allows the gradual transformation of the contrapuntal texture into a “harmonic constellation”. It also makes it possible to avoid creating an overly abrupt rupture with the resonances of the preceding contrapuntal writing. From bar 49 to 51, remove very progressively this slight “pedal tremolo”. • Page 5, bar 47 – number 7 – the “half-note” symbol now replaces the “white rectangles” from the 4th voice (starting in bar 31). This voice progressively develops, eventually becoming the canonic motif of the following bars. • Bar 52, the canonic motif of the toccata is increasingly present, replacing very gradually the “harmonic constellation”, which by bar 61 has totally disappeared.
