TWO PERCUSSION: INSTRUMENTATION Player #1: for movement #5 only: doubles on Timpani (5 drums)* TIMPANI: FIVE DRUMS ARE REQUIRED: I – II – III – IV – V (32”, 29”, 26”, 23”, 20”) Timpani tunings and drum allocations are clearly indicated on the score and part *If the percussionist does not play timpani, a timpanist will be needed. Therefore, a duplicate copy of the percussion #1 part is included with the complete orchestral parts. **Glockenspiel every note is “L.V. Molto” for the entire composition. (4 mallets needed) **Tubular Chimes (with a pedal lock holding down the pedal for the entire composition so that every note is “L.V. Molto”. Please use the most “in-tune” set of chimes possible. Large suspended cymbal every attack is “L.V. Molto” for the entire composition. 2 resonant wood bocks (medium and large) Three graduated low tom-toms (on the lower end of the pitch spectrum) 3 Triangles (small, medium, extra-large) every attack is “L.V. Molto” for the entire composition. 3 resonant suspended finger cymbals (small, medium, large) (not tinny!) please seek a sonic “cousin” to the triangles’ sounds as well as the crotales’ sounds. Every attack is “L.V. Molto” for the entire composition. OPTIONAL: Very large Tam-tam only for measure 77 of movement #5. **The Glockenspiel and Tubular Chimes need to be nearby each other and you may need to construct some double headed sticks for quick changes between the instruments)

(4 mallets needed) ***Vibraphone (motor on slow) a pedal lock is needed for the long sections in which the pedal is held down. Medium suspended cymbal every attack is “L.V. Molto” for the entire composition. 2 Bongos Large bass drum ***The Crotales and Vibraphone need to be nearby each other and you may need to construct some double headed sticks for quick changes between the instruments)

PERCUSSION: SET-UP ON STAGE WHEN FEASIBLE, THREE PRIMARY AND TWO SECONDARY STATIONS ARE SUGGESTED, WHICH ARE TO FORM A SEMI-CIRCLE AROUND THE SIDES AND VERY BACK OF THE ORCHESTRA. HENCE, THERE ARE FIVE STATIONS IN TOTAL. The 3 primary stations are these: #1: The 5 Timpani should be in the center of the back of the stage, set up as their own “station” as they are played only in Movement #5 in a significant, virtuosic solo. For Movement #5, percussion player #1 should move from their main performance station over to the timpani performance station. #2: Percussion I should be set up to one side of the timpani station. #3: Percussion II should be set up to the other side of the timpani station.

The 2 secondary stations, for Movements 5 and 6, are these: #1: For the final 2 movements, Horn 2 moves to a different playing station and plays only small tam-tam (2 mallets needed) and two triangles (small and medium) #2: For the final 2 movements, Trumpet 2 moves to a different playing station and plays only medium tam-tam (2 mallets needed), crotale, (pitch E) and one resonant suspended finger cymbal.

A piano-vocal score is available from the publisher. The premiere performance was presented without a conductor and therefore the individual instrumental parts are heavily cued.

NOTES: RESONANCE: Every sound in the percussion and harp parts should be L.V. MOLTO unless otherwise notated. In general, a maximum of “ring” and “resonance” is desired for this entire composition. All string pizzicatti should be L.V. MOLTO. FERMATAS ON NOTES: Please vary the durations of each normal, round-in-shape, fermata such that they do not become predictable. They are often an effort to “write-in” very flexible rubato and to add expressivity. In this way, each performance will be slightly different from one another. Their duration should depend on the resonance in the performance space. The square fermatas should be even longer than the normal, round-in-shape, fermatas. A TEMPO: Unless a new tempo is specified, then after each fermata, please return to the previous tempo. In other words, "A TEMPO" is not marked each time, but is implied and wanted. MOVEMENT #1, MEASURES 4 – 11: In the first movement, measures 4 - 11 can be slow and rubato as is needed by the 2 percussionists; but please retain the intricate rhythmic counterpoint even if you collectively stretch a beat. OSSIA NOTES IN VOCAL PARTS: The notes in parenthesis are composer’s second choice. ROLLED CHORDS: All rolled chords start right on the beat, not before the beat. BOWINGS: All printed string bowings, which were provided by the composer, are optional. BATTUTO HARMONICS: Battuto harmonics in the string parts should be ping-like, bell-like and L.V. MOLTO FEATHERED BEAMS IN TIMPANI PART: All feathered beams in the timpani solos can be played approximately. ****OPTIONAL DOUBLING ON SMALLER TRUMPETS: The trumpet players (especially Trumpet #1) may chose to play some of their part on a smaller trumpet, for instance playing on a Piccolo Trumpet in Bb. These decisions are left to the discretion of each player. For clarity and flexibility, therefore, the score and parts are always in C, showing the desired sounding pitches. HARP HARMONICS: sound one octave higher than written. CONTRABASS HARMONICS: sound one octave lower than written just like all other bass notes. CONTRABASS FAST MOVING, VERY LOW NOTES IN MOVEMENT 2: If played on a 4-string bass, with a low-C extension with "mechanical fingers" (instead of on a 5-string bass,) it is okay to omit some low notes at your discretion.
