Air Lié (The Lips Cycle #2)
Daniel D’Adamo
Air Lié (The Lips Cycle #2)
Air Lié mainly develops the sound character of the performers breath. The approach of the instrument in its traditional way of producing sound, here becomes practically a secondary subject. It is the action of blowing in the instrument that is central in the piece. The sound quality of the breath that is produced, its color, its pressure, its evolution, the distance between the mouth and the mouthpiece, the tension of the lips, the position of the mouth modulating the air emitted, are at the fundamentals of the production of the instrumental sound itself. Because of this, the performer is considered from the beginning of the project as if he were an instrument inside the instrument, or an instrument of the instrument.
The electronics is the third element constituting this "meta instrument": split on four spatialized channels, it deploys a contrapuntal mass of breathy sounds that constantly spread and circulates in the space of the concert hall. The electronics thus permanently extend the nature of the instrument, they actually augment it.
The use of the whispered voice is a reminder of why the first flute was designed: piercing holes in the surface of a bone previously emptied, blowing through one end and creating sound waves never heard before, a man gives for the first time in history a new meaning to the sound of his own breath. Transforming in this way his breath into sound, he surely did not then imagine the consequences that his gesture would later produce.
Air Lié is dedicated to Nicolas Vallette who recorded all the flute sounds used for the electroacoustic composition of the piece. His help was invaluable in researching particular fingerings based on an ergonomic approach of the instrument and in relation to the sound material I was looking for. The fingerings on the score belong to him.

Indications générales / General indications : la flèche indique une transformation dynamique de la technique vocale selon le paramètre indiqué / the arrow indicates a dynamic transformation of the vocal technique according to the indicated parameter : le crochet indique la durée de la technique vocale indiquée / the hook indicates the duration of the indicated vocal technique
Those indicated with a sharp must be performed a semitone higher, those indicated with a flat a semitone lower. If there is no particular indication, they are to be performed a semitone higher
Position des lèvres et de la bouche par rapport à l’embouchure / Position of the lips and the mouth with respect to the mouthpiece
: lèvres totalement lâches / totally loose lips : lèvres bien serrés / tight lips : position intermédiaire des lèvres / intermediate position of the lips
hors de l'embouchure : prononcer le son indiqué sous la note et sur la durée indiquée hors de l'embouchure, le son vocal n'entre pas dans la flûte / pronounce outside the mouthpiece the sound indicated under the note and on the indicated duration, the vocal sound does not get into the flute
recouvrant l’embouchure / covering the mouthpiece : recouvrir totalement l’embouchure avec la bouche / totally covering the mouthpiece with the mouth
Autres indications / Other indications bisb. ou / or bisbigliando : trille de doigtées différentes produisant la même hauteur / trill between different fingerings producing the same pitch
vib/mod : vibrato exagéré accompagné d’un enrichissement du timbre de l’instrument / exaggerated vibrato accompanied by an enrichment of the timbre of the instrument
The vowel between brackets should not be pronounced, but indicates the internal position of the mouth that will color the pronounced white noice
La voyelle entre parenthèses indique la position interne de la bouche / the sound of the flute is sometimes modulated by a sound indicated under the note (eg: sss (è), sh (i), etc.) which must be pronounced while producing the instrumental sound. The vowel between brackets indicates the internal position of the mouth
t(è)-k(è) : ce type de prononciation est indiqué pour renforcer les attaques courtes et répétées / this type of pronunciation is indicated to reinforce the short and repeated attacks
Overblowing : pression extrême et progressive de la colonne d’air, produisant l’apparition successive des différents partiels aigus / extreme and progressive pressure of the air column, successively producing different high partials
Z : son fendu, très enharmonique et avec une présence simultanée de plusieurs partiels, produit par une pression renforcée et une position serrée des lèvres / distorted sound, very inharmonic and with a simultaneous presence of several partial, produced by a reinforced pressure and a tight position of the lips
M : son multiphonique, produisant des partiels aigus de manière incontrôlée, conçu également comme une distortion du son normal de la flûte / multiphonic sound, producing high partials in an uncontrolled way, also conceived as a distortion of the normal sound of the flute
