(Transposed Score)
CHLOE KIRK
A Foreign Form for Clarinet, Piano, and Woodblock
(Full Score)
1
Program Notes The piece begins with air sounds in the clarinet, used to emulate wind and establish the sense of moving through an open, natural space. The first movement, Introducing the Birds, develops this environment through short, irregular gestures passed between instruments, imitating bird calls. The material is unmetered and loosely coordinated, allowing the texture to feel unstable and spatial, as if moving through a forest. As the piece progresses, these gestures begin to align. Repetition increases, and a steady pulse gradually emerges, reducing the independence of each part. The second movement, Advancing!, shifts toward control and regularity. Rhythm becomes consistent, patterns accumulate, and the texture grows more mechanical, overtaking the earlier, more organic material. The piece ends with wind-like swells in the woodblock, echoing the opening gesture in a more fixed form, suggesting that even as systems impose structure, traces of the natural world remain.
