CAPRICCI "HUMMINGBIRD ROMANCE" (for flute and clarinet in Bb)
Whimsical, fanfare-like revelry for Michelle Pellay Walker and Paul Pellay on the occasion of their wedding
The world premiere performance presented by Ensemble Dal Niente, Constance Volk, flute and Katie Schoepflin, clarinet. May 11, 2014, Chicago, Illinois.

FERMATAS ON NOTES: Please vary the durations of each normal, round-in-shape, fermata such that they do not become predictable. They are often an effort to “write-in” very flexible rubato and to add expressivity. In this way, each performance will be slightly different from one another. Their duration should depend on the resonance in the performance space. The square fermatas should be even longer than the normal, round-in-shape, fermatas. However none make us feel that the momentum stops, rather, all fermatas are moments of heightened expressivity.
A TEMPO: Unless a new tempo is specified, then after each fermata, please return to the previous tempo. In other words, "A TEMPO" is not marked each time, but is implied and wanted.
DYNAMICS: There are only six dynamics used in this score (pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff) so that each “level” of volume has a clear meaning and sound.
STANDING: This work should be performed standing whenever possible.
FLUTTER TONGUE: The flutter tongue notations apply to only the notes on which the tremolo lines are notated. The note immediately following a note with the tremolo lines that does not have tremolo lines is automatically back to ord. i.e.: at times, things moves quicly between ORD and FLTZ. All FLTZ in the Clarinet are marked as optional. The Clarinet should either play 80% of the notes marked as FLTZ, so that they are integrated across the piece, or play none of them. To play only one or two FLTZ would not be integrated enough.
PARTS: The PARTS are the same as the SCORE. Please play from loose pages and slide the pages over, one by one, as you play, so that there are no page turns. It is optional for both musicians to play from the same part, sharing a music stand.
