Like rain in spring. Bring - ing life.
Alma & Luc have arrived at a celebration in town, a fiesta. They dance. At some point during the interlude, a CHILD (a little girl, 4) dances at their feet. ALMA watches as LUC picks up the child and spins her around. LUC sets the child gently down. She runs off into the crowd. Everything stops. A beat of silence. A knife in ALMA’s heart.
Prestissimo q=252
Spoken dialogue (after interlude I ends):
ALMA But you must— You do want to have children?
LUC (beaming) Of course I do.
ALMA Then turn around. Walk away from me.
ALMA, now almost 50, is sitting in a cafe (or some other similar location) when SOPHIE enters. ALMA’s expression visibly shifts. It’s as if she’s falling in love with SOPHIE through LUC's eyes. This is it, she’s the one. ALMA joins SOPHIE. They forge an instant connection.

(for live performances of the piece: Time has passed. Alma is almost 50. Previously, we will have seen her presenting Luc with a handful of other women, potential contenders for her role. Luc refuses to look at any of them. And then ALMA meets SOPHIE. They forge an instant connection. ALMA knows she is the one. She brings SOPHIE to a gathering, where she introduces her to Luc.)

By now, ALMA has removed herself from the gathering, unnoticed. She remains, set apart, a distance from them.
Text onscreen: Four years later. (Stage direction: Four years later, she returns. A child runs to greet her.)
