SET TO STRENGTHEN GHSA’S STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION

eorgia high school football has long been recognized for its statewide greatness, and each December when the state championships roll around, it is easy to see why. A competitive spirit emanates from every corner of the Peach State throughout the season, but only during the state championships can programs share the stage to compete for Georgia’s ultimate prize. Eight decades have passed since the GHSA crowned the first Georgia state champion, and while the tradition remains the same, the significant growth of the championship spotlight has strengthened it. The Georgia Dome provided Georgia high school football with a stage for 25 years, saying its farewell last December with an eight-game, two-day marathon of state-championship action. A total of 290 Georgia high school football games and 171 different schools shared the Dome’s spotlight over the years; now, it’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s turn.

“I think it’s awesome,” said GHSA Executive Director Robin Hines. “The helmet wall is tremendous and the memorabilia is also exciting to look at. There is so much state pride and history on that wall. One of my favorite pieces is former Falcons running back William Andrews’ Thomasville High School letter sweater. That’s my home school and it’s special to see the pride of Georgia high school football built into this incredible stadium.”

THE ROAD TO ATLANTA

Only five of the 16 teams that punched their tickets to Mercedes-Benz Stadium this weekend are Metro Atlanta schools, and the teams will travel more than 1,650 miles from across the state to share the championship stage. he Packers are going for their fourth state title and third in four years after winning back-to-back championships in 2014-15. Head coach Rush Propst, in his 10th season, is 105-33 and has reached at least the state quarterfinals in all but his first year in Moultrie. Colquitt County is led by quarterback Steven Krajewski, who has thrown for 2,211 yards and 22 touchdowns and completed 184 of 282 passes, 65 percent. Wide receivers Cam Singletary and Marvion McDonald are his main weapons in the passing game. The run game, however, carried the Packers in their semifinal win over Brookwood. Colquitt County rushed for 285 yards in the game, with 183 from Daijun Edwards and 67 from Ty Leggett, each scoring a touchdown. Ryan Fitzgerald is one of the top junior kickers in the country. Colquitt has had an amazing run in the postseason, defeating three Atlanta-area No. 1 seeds on the road.

orth Gwinnett defied expectations to reach the title game in head coach Bill Stewart’s first season. The Bulldogs had not reached double-digit wins since 2013, when they lost in the state title game under previous head coach Bob Sphire. North Gwinnett is seeking its first state title in program history. The Bulldogs’ lone loss came in their opener at the Corky Kell Classic, as Walton blocked a last-second field-goal attempt to secure a 31-28 win. Quarterback Jimmy Urzua has led the Bulldogs to a 12-0 mark after starter Cade Fortin went down with injury, and the senior has been outstanding. He threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns, rushing for a score as well, in the team’s semifinal victory over McEachern. Running back Tyler Goodson has had an outstanding playoffs, rushing for nine touchdowns. The defense came up big in the semis, forcing four turnovers and getting a defensive touchdown from linebacker Jayden McDonald.

COLQUITT COUNTY VS. NORTH GWINNETT CLASS AAAAAAA SKINNY This is just the second season that Georgia has featured a Class AAAAAAA, composed of the state’s 48 largest schools. Though the classification saw only two teams ranked No. 1 during the course of the season, the parity among the top teams was evident. Defending champ Grayson was tops in the class until a loss to Archer dropped the preseason favorite Rams to 6-1, and Lowndes held the No. 1 spot heading into the playoffs. North Gwinnett knocked out Grayson 35-28 in the second round, and previously undefeated Lowndes lost to semifinalist McEachern 36-31 in a dramatic quarterfinals game. Colquitt County was No. 2 in the state before falling on the road to Brookwood, but the Packers avenged that loss with a 31-14 road semifinals win over the Broncos last week.

The Trojans have tied a program best under head coach Robby Pruitt, in his sixth year, with their fourth-straight trip to the postseason. Running back Jameon Gaskin has rushed for 1,256 yards this season but was limited in the semifinals victory due to an injury he suffered in the quarterfinals. Quarterback Wade Sumner was efficient in the 14-3 victory over Tucker at Adams Stadium in DeKalb County. The senior was 10-of-14 passing for 118 yards and a 27-yard touchdown pass to running back Antonio Dawson, who featured for the Trojans because of injuries. Sumner also added 72 yards rushing on 18 carries. The Coffee defense came up big in the semifinals win; star defensive back Jarquavious Jefferson intercepted Tucker in the red zone late in the game.

ee County has made the playoffs six times out of Dean Fabrizio’s nine years there, the best stretch in school history. This season is also the first that the team has advanced beyond the second round of the playoffs and sets a school record for wins, three more than the previous mark. The Trojans feature a top quarterback in Jase Orndorff, who threw for over 2,100 yards in just the regular season. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns in Lee County’s dramatic 42-38 comeback victory against Glynn Academy in the semifinals. In that game, the Trojans came back from a 31-14 halftime deficit and the defense picked up four Glynn turnovers in the second half. Star defensive back Otis Reese leads a unit that had only given up 11.5 points per game before the semifinals shootout. Running back Nikko Cruz and wide receiver Ty Terrell also star for Lee County.

COFFEE VS. LEE COUNTY CLASS AAAAAA SKINNY

There will be a first-time state champion in Class AAAAAA, and it will come from Region 1. Tucker and finalist Lee County were No. 1 and No. 2 in the class, respectively, until Lee County fell to defending champion Valdosta to drop to 8-1. Tucker continued into the playoffs as the top team in the class with only a 14-point road loss to Class AAAAAAA Colquitt County, but Coffee took down Tucker 14-3 on the road in the semifinals. Both Lee County and Coffee spent the entirety of the fall in the Top 10, but Lee County’s 23-7 on Coffee win in the final regular-season game gave it the region’s top seed. Coffee is 4-2 against Lee County all-time, but Lee’s wins have come in the past two regular seasons and by double digits.

his year’s Rome team looks more like the product of a football dynasty than a team looking to defend the only state title in its program’s history. But whatever the mission may be, Rome has been unstoppable in 2017. The Wolves’ obliteration of the competition this season has engraved an average margin of victory of 41.3 points into a flawless 14-0 record, and the run includes last week’s 45-7 semifinal win over 11-time state champion Buford. Head coach John Reid’s defense has a relentless pass rush spearheaded by Georgia-commit Adam Anderson that can make any passing play seem like a gamble. Offensively, junior quarterback Knox Kadum already led the team to a state title as a sophomore and is back making even better decisions and plays this season. Junior Jamious Griffin has run in 27 of the team’s 66 rushing touchdowns this season, and this offensive depth and balance transformed Rome into the state’s highest scoring attack this season.

hile Rome campaigns for back-to-back state titles, Warner Robins looks to complete the state’s most dramatic turnaround in head coach Mike Chastain’s second season at the school. The Demons were just a 3-8 team that was ousted by Griffin in the first round a year ago. Now they are riding a perfect 14-0 run to the state championship. The difference maker has been junior quarterback Dylan Fromm. In last week’s 31-7 win over Carver-Atlanta in the semis, Fromm threw for 204 yards and a pair of touchdowns. This marked Fromm’s 34th and 35th touchdown passes of the season and resulted in his 11th multi-touchdown game of season. Nine different Demons receivers have caught touchdown passes this year and Rome could find trouble if the pass rush is unable to disrupt the rhythm between Fromm and his array of targets. Senior running back Jarius Burnett is a physical runner who will need to cash in on short-yardage opportunities to keep the Rome offense on the field.

Rome already knows what it takes to win a title. The Wolves wrote the script just a year ago and have only looked better in each of the 14 games since. Warner Robins is going to need to discover its own championship formula. Rome’s offense is a well-oiled machine that has scored more points than any school in the state this season. No team in the classification rivals the season-long consistency and success that Rome’s offense has shown. Warner Robins has plenty of playmakers, however, and if the Demons can spark their signature brand of explosive passing plays they could disrupt the tempo and potentially seize control of this football game. Regardless, both programs return a wealth of talent next season and this game will steer the Class AAAAA conversation next fall.

arist is one of the six teams taking an undefeated record into this weekend’s finals. The War Eagles improved throughout their 10-0 regular season and have looked even better in the postseason with double-digit victories in each round and a 20-point average margin of victory. As good as Marist has been, however, its Oct. 20 win over Blessed Trinity hints to why Saturday’s final will be the biggest test of their season. Playing in the smallest, and only five-team region of Class AAAA made Oct. 20 already feel like a playoff atmosphere. Marist never led in that game and trailed 24-17 with 5:46 left before converting three fourth downs and capping off an 18-play scoring drive with a Chase Abshire 2-yard touchdown run with just 53 seconds left. Still trailing 24-23, head coach Alan Chadwick chose to go for two. Abshire found Kyle Hamilton on a slant for the 25-24 win and Marist’s Region 7-AAAA title was clinched.

ince Blessed Trinity’s 25-24 loss to Marist on Oct. 20, the Titans have conquered an incredible stretch of games that includes road playoff victories over Cartersville (21-17), Thomson (43-13) and Mary Persons (28-7). Junior quarterback Jake Smith threw three interceptions in the regular-season loss to Marist, but has thrown eight touchdowns and three interceptions in the five games since. Junior running back Steele Chambers rushed for three touchdowns in the loss to Marist and has added eight more touchdown runs, two touchdown receptions and a touchdown pass in the five games since. The Titans are well-balanced offensively and their defense has been a nightmare for opposing offenses and especially their passing games. Expect Blessed Trinity’s top playmakers to contribute on both sides of the football on Saturday. Blessed Trinity is still a young team, but they are loaded with talent and share an invaluable bond from the bulk of the roster having played together since youth football.

MARIST VS. BLESSED TRINITY CLASS AAAA SKINNY

Marist and Blessed Trinity did not play for the first time until 2016 when the GHSA’s reclassification pinned the two powerhouses in Region 7-AAAA together. A 28-26 Blessed Trinity victory in the first-ever meeting and a 25-24 Marist victory this season has set up a rubber match for the ages on Saturday. Marist head coach Alan Chadwick has led the War Eagles in 33 straight postseasons and is two-of-five in championship games. Tim McFarlin previously led Roswell to a state title in 2006 before taking over for Blessed Trinity in 2011. This is the second finals appearance in the past three seasons for Blessed Trinity, which still searches for its first crown. These teams dominated Class AAAA’s best to set up the weekend’s only finals matchup with two Metro Atlanta teams.

each County avenged last year’s loss to GAC in the semifinals to advance to the championship game after dropping just one game all year, to Class AAAAA finalist Warner Robins. The Trojans, who won titles in 2005, 2006 and 2009, have not made a championship game appearance since 2011, when they fell to Burke County 28-14. Peach will be without star wideout Kearis Jackson but has done well without the UGA commit since he was injured in the second round, and numerous players have stepped up. In the semifinal game against Greater Atlanta Christian, Antonio Gilbert passed to seven different receivers, demonstrating the depth of the Trojans receiver corps. Gilbert finished 28-of-37 for 325 yards and two touchdowns, to Millard Thomas and Jaydon Gibson. Under Chad Campbell’s leadership, Peach has been to at least the semifinals three times, at least the quarterfinals once and the final game twice with one title in 2009.

he Yellow Jackets are in familiar territory as they are entering their seventh state title appearance in the past 10 seasons under Hal Lamb’s watch. Lamb, who arrived at Calhoun in 1999, missed the playoffs in his first season, but in 2000 he made it to the first round. Since then, Lamb has led the Yellow Jackets to a region title and playoff appearance every season since 2001. Calhoun has state championships in 2011 after defeating Buford 27-24 in overtime and 2014 after defeating Washington County 27-20. This season, the Yellow Jackets entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed from Region 6 and proved doubters wrong with a semifinal victory over the heavily favored and defending champion Cedar Grove Saints. In Calhoun’s 14-6 victory, it held an explosive Cedar Grove offense to just 170 total yards. Gavin Gray had touchdown passes of 6 yards to tight end Davis Allen and 60 yards to Brannon Spector.

All season long, the focus was on the top three ranked teams in the classification—No. 1 Cedar Grove, No. 2 Peach County and No. 3 Greater Atlanta Christian—with the rest of the class looking in at the titans. Two of the three came up short of the finals, and a deserving Calhoun program is back in the state championship game again. This will mark a rematch of the second-round playoff game in 2014 in which Calhoun defeated Peach County 20-14 in overtime. Since falling to Class AAAA Cartersville 58-6 on Sept. 1, the Yellow Jackets have not been challenged, climbing in the Class AAA rankings from No. 6 to No. 4, where they entered the playoffs. Peach County handled Savannah, Pierce County and Westminster in the playoffs before its close win over Greater Atlanta Christian.

RABUN COUNTY 14-0, REGION 8 NO. 1 SEED

HAPEVILLE CHARTER 13-1, REGION 6 NO. 1 SEED

abun County, under head coach Lee Shaw and offensive coordinator Jaybo Shaw, features an offense that has not been stopped all season. Led by senior quarterback Bailey Fisher, the Wildcats offense has been prolific this season. Through 14 games, Fisher has 3,145 yards passing and 40 touchdowns with just four interceptions. Fisher also leads Rabun’s run game, which is also causes problems for opposing defenses. Against Brooks County, Fisher passed for 234 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 74 yards and a score. On the season, Fisher has rushed for 1,169 yards and 27 touchdowns on 191 carries with a handful of games of 100-plus yards rushing. Cole Keener leads the Wildcats receivers with 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns on 52 receptions. Keener, who splits his time as a defensive back, had three interceptions against Brooks County in the semifinals, including one as time expired. Rabun routed Chattooga, B.E.S.T. Academy and Screven County in the first three rounds.

he Hornets are in just their seventh year playing football and are already playing for a state championship. A first-year coach in 2011, Winston Gordon led the Hornets through some tough times. He coached Hapeville through the 0-4 inaugural season in 2011, the 3-7 season in 2012 and the 1-8-1 season in 2013. The first winning season came just two years ago when Hapeville finished 6-4 in 2015. The balanced Hapeville Charter offense is led by quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams, who has passed for well over 2,000 yards and is a threat to run as well. The Hornets have a number of capable receivers and are led by seniors Kivante’ Johnson and Rory Starkey. On the ground, the Hornets have a strong stable of running backs. Senior Harper Atkins Jr. and sophomore Marcus Carroll lead the pack for Hapeville in the rushing game. The defense is one of the most talented groups in the playoffs and has five shutouts on the season, including a 24-0 victory over Spencer in the first round.

RABUN COUNTY VS. HAPEVILLE CHARTER CLASS AA SKINNY This game provides a chance for either team to win its first-ever state title, and even though both programs have very different histories, both are equally hungry. Rabun County has been playing football since 1949, while Hapeville Charter is just in its seventh season and is already a championship-caliber program. Since Lee Shaw took over in 2012, the Rabun County Wildcats have made it to the playoffs each of his six seasons. However, they have fallen in the quarterfinals in the past two years and before that had never made it past the second round. Hapeville Charter made it to the semifinals last year and lost to Fitzgerald after entering the playoffs with three losses. This year’s Hornets squad has not lost to a Georgia team as its only loss came at the hands of Thompson (Ala.) 21-20.

CLINCH COUNTY 11-2, REGION 2 NO. 5 SEED

linch County is no stranger to playing for state titles. In 2015, the Panthers suffered only one loss, to their 2017 championship opponent Irwin County. The teams met again in the 2015 state title game, and Clinch walked away victorious after a 24-7 win. Last year, Clinch County’s only regular-season loss was a 35-21 defeat to Brooks County; the Panthers entered the playoffs as the No. 2 state seed in Class A-Private and advanced to the semifinals before losing 24-8 to McIntosh County Academy. This season, however, the Panthers find themselves in the championship game after defeating No. 21 Dooly County, No. 4 Mitchell County and No. 8 Mount Zion-Carroll. In the semifinal game, Clinch beat Mt. Zion thanks to a blocked field-goal attempt in the final minute. Trezmen Marshall, a 4-star recruit, stars on both sides of the ball. Head coach Jim Dickerson has racked up 138 wins along with three state titles during his 13 seasons at Clinch County.

ince taking over as head coach in 2014, Buddy Nobles has led Irwin County to one quarterfinals appearance along with three trips to the championship game. In 2014, after losing only one game during the regular season, the Indians, the No. 2 seed in the state, were defeated by fourth-seeded Hawkinsville 15-6 in the state title game. The Indians lost to Clinch County in the 2015 title game, and the 2016 season was the first in three years in which the team didn’t advance past the quarterfinals. But the Indians have lost only once this season, to Class AA Fitzgerald. D.J. Lundy, who rushed for the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter of the semifinals game against Emanuel County Institute, carried the ball 24 times for 127 last weekend. Quarterback Will Stephens was 10-of-11 passing for 208 yards and three touchdowns, two to Jamorri Colson and one to Hunter Spires, to help Irwin overcome a 22-8 deficit in the second quarter.

CLINCH COUNTY VS. IRWIN COUNTY CLASS A-PUBLIC SKINNY

After back-to-back losses to Irwin County in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Clinch County got an opportunity to best the Indians in the ’05 championship game. Sophomore Charles McClelland, now a senior star for Clinch County, helped secure the 24-7 victory, rushing for 183 yards and a touchdown to bring home the school’s sixth title. Irwin County has advanced to the finals three times in the past four years but hasn’t won a title since 1975. With both teams going head-to-head frequently, this rematch of the 2015 state championship game should be a thrilling contest between two teams with history. Irwin is 21-20-1 all-time against Clinch since the teams first met in 1952 and is 9-5 in the series since 1998, after a decade and a half of dominance by Clinch from 1993-98.

EAGLE’S LANDING CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 13-0, REGION 5 NO. 1 SEED

agle’s Landing Christian’s dominance throughout the regular season helped the Chargers achieve a perfect 2017 season, giving them a chance for their third consecutive state title. After losing their first game during the 2012 season, ELCA held strong and won out for the rest of the season. They shut out opponent Prince Avenue in the Championship game to claim the first school title since 1996. After a 2014 season in which the Chargers went 7-7 and lost in the finals to Mount Paran, they responded in 2015 by advancing all the way to the finals, where they upset third-ranked Aquinas 3514. The 2016 season was more of the same, as the Chargers went undefeated, ending their season with a double-overtime victory over Fellowship Christian after running back Trevor Gear rushed into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Justin Menard and Josh Mays provide a one-two punch on offense.

thens Academy’s 13-0 record gives the school a chance at its first perfect record and state title in school history. Truly in superior form, the Spartans have beaten opponents this year by an average of just over 32 points, making them a hard team to keep up with. A close game with third-ranked Mount Paran Christian in the semifinals almost ended the Spartans’ season. Midway through the third quarter, George Smith picked up a Mount Paran fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to give the Spartans a 14-7 lead that they would not give up. Sophomore Len’Neth Whitehead stars at running back and linebackers. Head coach Josh Alexander is in his third season with Athens Academy and led the team to its first region title in five years this fall. Alexander has a 31-5 record at Athens Academy. With strong coaching and a prolific offense, the Spartans will look to upset the Chargers.

ELCA VS. ATHENS ACADEMY CLASS A-PRIVATE SKINNY

This year’s championship game features No. 1 seed Eagle’s Landing Christian against a second-seeded Athens Academy squad looking for its first state title. While the Spartans’ 2017 season gives them an opportunity to make school history, Eagle’s Landing Christian is familiar with playing for state titles. The Chargers have won three in the past five years and are aiming to win their third in a row. Both teams feature talent on each side of the ball. ELCA has put up an unmatched average of almost 53 points per game and has shut out each team it has faced in the postseason. Athens Academy has only given up 28 points in three games during the playoffs, just over nine points per game, so the Spartans will look to slow down the Chargers in the title game.

Georgia’s Electric Membership Cooperatives (Georgia’s EMCs) proudly sponsors the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award and today announces the 48 GHSA-member high schools that will receive the 2017 award. The award honors schools that demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship during the 20162017 school year. Since 2006, the GHSA and Georgia’s EMCs have sponsored the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award, which reinforces the GHSA philosophy: “Students, athletes, coaches, spectators and all others associated with high school activities programs should adhere to the fundamental values of respect, fairness, honesty and responsibility.” Schools around the state are honored for exhibiting exceptional sportsmanship during competitive events. Student athletes, fellow students, school staff, parents and event spectators are recognized for the sportsmanship they display. The award is not only a school honor, but a community honor as well. The GHSA region secretaries select winners based upon the sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the school year. Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Awards are presented annually to the GHSA-member high schools in the 48 regions from the six classifications by representatives from the EMCs during fall athletic events and school assemblies.
