NORTH ATLANTA WARRIORS North Atlanta carries a 1-0 record into its first-ever Great Atlanta Bash appearance after posting an outstanding 10-7 home victory over Wheeler in last week’s season opener. Wheeler jumped out to a 7-0 halftime lead before North Atlanta completed the comeback with a combination of stout defense and effective rushing offensively. The Warriors racked up 117 rushing yards in the second half and tied the game with a 1-yard Caleb Pack touchdown before Taft Meredith’s game-winning 23yard field goal. North Atlanta is led by second-year head coach Jamie Aull—who served as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2019 when the Warriors sparked a school-record 7-4 season. Aull is the program’s ninth different head coach since 2005, but he has been with the program since 2018 and has been able to provide valuable continuity to the Warriors. Wheeler was able to force five sacks in last week’s game and so pass protection will be a priority heading into Friday’s contest with Therrell. North Atlanta was established in 1991 and achieved its first-ever playoff appearance in 1996. More than two decades passed until the Warriors’ returned to the postseason in 2019 with a 7-4 campaign. That 2019 team scored a school-record 328 points (29.82 ppg) and returning to that level of offensive production will be a priority following a 2020 season that saw the Warriors fall to 18.75 ppg. North Atlanta was placed in a challenging Region 4-AAAAAA field starting in 2020 and will see top programs like Westlake, Lovejoy, Hughes and Tucker again this season following a five-game non-region slate.
THERRELL PANTHERS Therrell will be led by Panthers alum Broderick Jamison this season, who graduated from the school in 2003. Jamison’s senior year at Therrell was the program’s last winning season and the excitement in the community is sky high as this year’s team will be led by a strong senior class. Jamison last coached at Douglass—another Class 2A program, and is one of the four new hires that occurred in APS this offseason. Among the seniors that will be leading this year’s team are 6-foot-4 quarterback Khamar Carlisle, 5-foot-10 wide receiver and cornerback Kameron Slade and 6-foot-3 tight end and defensive end Nyseer Fullwood-Theodore. Therrell’s season was set to begin with a trip to Glenn Hills last Friday, but the home team informed Therrell, which was already halfway along their trip to Augusta, that there was a positive COVID test within the program and the game was called off. Therrell won that matchup 30-8 last season and now Jamison will make his head coaching debut in the Great Atlanta Bash as the Panthers also make their first-ever appearance in the event. Therrell competes in a nine-team Region 6 that includes tough competition like South Atlanta, Washington, Lovett and Pace Academy. Therefore, Saturday’s battle with North Atlanta will be just one of two non-region games the Panthers have before they dive into region play. Therrell has emerged victorious in each of its last three season openers heading into kickoff and this year’s senior class will have an opportunity to leave the program with a flawless record in that department.
CARVER-ATLANTA PANTHERS Carver-Atlanta is aiming for the program’s 10th-straight playoff appearance this year and is coming off an impressive run to last year’s state quarterfinals. The Panthers punched a ticket to the semifinals for the first time since 1968 during the 2017 season and remain a top contender in Class 3A. Carver-Atlanta competes in arguably the toughest region in Class 3A and also routinely schedules massive non-region matchups against teams from higher classifications. Last year, this included Cherokee, Lovejoy and Class 6A state champion Buford and this year Carver will have faced West Forsyth, Lovejoy and Providence Day (NC) by the time they get into region play. Carver opened up its season against Class 7A’s West Forsyth in this year’s Corky Kell Classic and was topped 38-8. The Panthers trailed just 7-0 at the half and were tied evenly with West Forsyth with 104 total yards gained. Carver’s run defense held West Forsyth to minus eight yards in the second quarter and forced the Wolverines to rely soley on the passing game to eventually get the win. Linebacker Dialo Mosely is one of the top tacklers in the state of Georgia and the defense also features playmakers like Terrell Lightfoot Jr. and Aquantis Clemmons on the defensive line. Offensively, Quintavious Lockett accounted for a team-high 54 rushing yards off 11 carries against West Forsyth and Carver was able to involve a total of eight different rushers in the ball game— including Adam Sheely who rushed for a 3-yard touchdown in the final quarter and finished with 46 yards off of six carries.

LOVEJOY WILDCATS The Wildcats opened the season with a 41-0 victory over Mundy’s Mill last week and -– building on a 9-2 finish last season -– Lovejoy is rolling. “It showed promise,” said head coach Edgar Carson of the opening shutout victory. “Coach Cory Johnson, my defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, I think he did a great job getting the guys prepared and the entire defensive staff. It must be a total team effort. Everyone has to buy in. Next man up mentality. Everyone has to get to the ball.” Last season, Lovejoy’s game against Carver-Atlanta in the Great Atlanta Bash was a closely contested affair with Lovejoy taking a 27-26 victory. This season’s contest should provide a similar quality competition. The victory was the second of a streak of seven wins, including a 19-7 victory over North Gwinnett. The Wildcats scheduled an identical 2021 schedule and will look for similar results. “We are looking forward to another exciting game with Carver-Atlanta,” said Carson. “It came down to the wire last year. Coach (Darren) Myles does a great job over there. They are loaded with a ton of athletes. I think that will be a pretty good game. I hope that energy we had last week will build into practice and then hopefully we can build on that the rest of the week to get ready for Carver.” Stephin Craig – a 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior quarterback – will lead the offense for Lovejoy. In the Great Atlanta Bash last season, Craig was 11-of-26 passing for 223 yards and four touchdowns.
MAYS RAIDERS Mays opened its season with a 52-6 loss to Cherokee in the Corky Kell Classic last week and -– following coach Niketa Battle’s first losing season (3-7) at Mays in 2020 -- the Raiders will look to bounce back at the Great Atlanta Bash. Mays lost a few skill players on offense, including their top two receivers and their top running back. Junior Triston Morgan will have to step up for the Raiders at running back and lightning-fast corner Travis Terrell Jr. got a few carries last season so he may get more of a workload on offense in 2021. At receiver, senior Almonte Duncan and junior Nagari Tophia return as the only wide receivers to score touchdowns last season, so expect their role to be expanded. On defense, senior safety Jalen Johnson, Almonte Duncan, and junior defensive end Bryan Glass should be the main guys the team should look out for. Against Cherokee in the Corky Kell Classic, quarterback Saulamon Evans caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Quintavious Johnson in the first half for the Raiders’ only offensive scoring play of the game. Johnson was 11-of-27 passing for 162 yards and a touchdown and also carried the ball 11 times for 71 yards. Evans had three receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Duncan led with a team-high five solo tackles and an assist. The Raiders’ defense made four tackles for loss and one sack against Cherokee, with Elijah Hall leading with one sack and two tackles for loss.
RIVERDALE RAIDERS Riverdale will open its season at the Great Atlanta Bash and will be looking to build upon the success experienced in last season’s 8-3 campaign that saw the Raiders advance to the Class 4A quarterfinals before losing to Benedictine. Riverdale beat Cedar Shoals (44-7) and Northwest Whitfield (42-17) in the first two round of the playoffs last season. “It’s a little bit of both,” head coach Rodney Hackney said about a rebuild vs. reloading season. “We have a veteran offensive line coming back. They were young last year, pretty much sophomore and juniors. I only have one senior on the offensive line right now.” The successful playoff run marked Riverdale’s first quarterfinal appearance since head coach George Spencer led the Raiders to the semifinals in 1998. “It’s kind of the same scenarios that happened last year is going down again,” Hackney said of his similar non-region schedule this year. “We are going into this game, it’s similar. Mays didn’t play too well last week against Cherokee. But – last year – they didn’t play too well against West Forsyth, but then gave us a great game. We know they will come ready to play against us. We are not buying too much into their first game. We know Mays has talent and they have a good quarterback. Coach Battle does a great job with the defense. We will have to play a good game to beat them. The loss to Mays last year was a wake-up call for us, but it showed us we could play with some high-caliber talent and it pushed us toward having the type of region success we had.” Riverdale did not give up a point throughout its region games in 2020 with victories over Fayette County (32-0), Hampton (38-0), McDonough (55-0) and Luella (34-0).
