Many hours of work from this group will enhance the experience of our players, students and fans. The GHSA staff has been working for weeks as well to ensure a special event for all involved. This has been an outstanding season and this year’s championship games will include familiar faces as well as teams that have worked hard and peaked at just the right time. ourteen teams will travel to Marietta High School (Class AAAAAAA-AAAA) and McEachern High School (Class AAA-AA/A-Private) for a chance to take home a state title. Of these teams, eight are making consecutive finals appearances (Walton, McIntosh, Marist, Westminster, Pace Academy, Coosa, Calvary Day and Mt. Paran Christian) while six are playing for a consecutive title (Walton, McIntosh, Marist, Pace Adacemy, Coosa, Calvary Day and Mt. Paran Christian.) In the state’s highest classification, the Walton Lady Raiders will be on the hunt for their eighth state title over the past nine years. As the current seventh-ranked team in the country according to MaxPreps, Walton has accumulated a strong 40-3 season in part to a multi-dimensional offense that runs several attackers at once. Up front, Ohio State commits Gabby Gonzales and Reilly MacNeill are a force to be reckoned with. During the Lady Raiders semifinal sweep over North Gwinnett, the pair of seniors accounted for 39 kills, helping Gonzales add to her whopping total of 522 kills on the season. On the opposite side of the net, Milton is one match away from taking home their first ever volleyball state title. The Eagles not only bring a strong defense to the court, but are backed with a hardhitting offense in senior Devon Bright. Her 496 kills lead the team, while Junior Ashton Middleton leads the team with 1242 assists. The Raiders have yet to give up a single set during their playoff run and will look to end
a determined Milton team that plays for every point.
BATTLE-TESTED
The Pope Greyhounds were knocked out of last season’s title run when they lost a 3-1 match against the would-be champs Harrison, whose win over Alpharetta gave them their fourth title in school history. This year featured a different tale as the Greyhounds eliminated the defending champs before advancing into the Sweet Sixteen to take on top seeded Apalachee. Leading the Greyhounds’ offense is a dynamic pair of sophomores: Stella Dees and Lily Harvey. The two have combined for 494 kills and will be needed to penetrate an Allatoona defense that has only given up one set this postseason. Since their program’s birth in 2008, the Buccaneers have reached the state playoffs 10 straight times. They’ve visited the Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen on four occasions with one appearance in the Final Four. This year represents a golden opportunity for the program to snag its first-ever title. Brianna Stopher has accumulated over 1,000 career digs during her time at Allatoona, while fellow senior Emma Ahrens has racked up over 1,000 career kills. Junior Chamblee Russell contributes to the attack, and Callie Miller was an AllArea/Region player whose return to the team after missing over a half of the season due to a broken bone in her leg bolsters’ the Bucs chances on Saturday. The McIntosh Chiefs claimed their third state title in a victory over Buford in
last year’s Class AAAAA finals. The two teams met in the semifinals this Tuesday, where the Chiefs swept their way back to the championship stage. Erykah Lovett and Ngozi Iloh are key components of McIntosh’s success this year, and the two sophomores have combined for 707 kills. Junior setter Jessie Doyal and sophomore Claire Lewis are back after playing huge roles during the Chiefs last championship appearance. On the other bench will be Starr’s Mill which has already been served two losses at the hands of the Chiefs this year. The Panthers’ leader in kills is senior Megan Lee (305) with freshman Nicole Smith (237) behind her.
FAMILIAR FOES
The Marist War Eagles have a decorated volleyball history with eight titles, and they’ll take aim for No. 9 against a familiar St. Pius program. The War Eagles lost 3-1 to the Golden Lions earlier in the season and will look to sophomore Jacque Boney and junior Kailin Taggart, who lead the team with a combined 618 kills, to help ignite their offense. On the other side of the net, St. Pius will supply senior Anna Porter and junior Maggie McCurdy with opportunities, and the duo has a combined 614 kills on the season. In class AAA, defending state champion Pace Academy will face 2016 state champion Westminster in the finals for the third straight year. The Knights have yet to give up a set during the postseason and are equipped with plenty of talent in junior libe-
ro Dominique Turner and sophomore setter Kalissa Greene. Westminster is led by sophomore outside hitter Mary Emily Morgan.
NEW ROADS TO RICHES
Beginning this year, the GHSA has divided Class A and created Class AA/A-Public and Class AA/A-Private classifications. With this change, Class A-Public schools will be matched up against other AA-Public schools rather than taking on the Class A private teams. This opens the opportunity for Coosa and Elite Scholars Academy to claim the state’s first-ever Class AA/A-Public volleyball title, while Calvary Day and Mt. Paran will battle for the state’s first-ever Class AA/A-Private volleyball title. In Class AA/A-Private, three-time defending state champion Calvary Day meets Mt. Paran Christian for a rematch of last year’s Class A final. Coosa took the Class AA state title last year for its first-ever crown and will defend it against Elite Scholars Academy, which makes its historic first championship appearance. Coosa juniors Jordan Roberts (14) and Kasey Thacker (11) posted 25 kills in Tuesday’s 3-0 semifinal sweep of Gordon Lee. Elite Scholars team captain Tobie Kassim plays outside hitter, but can play in a variety of roles. It is this versatility and leadership that has helped the Royal Knights program grow from a 1-13 finish in 2016 to its current run to the finals. alton is one match away from its 13th all-time state title, fourth-straight and eighth in the last nine seasons. The Raiders earned the ultimate prize last season by taking the 2017 PrepVolleyball National Title and have dominated another challenging schedule this season. The last time Walton and Milton squared off was during the 2016 season and the Raiders swept in a two set victory (25-10, 25-9). Reigning Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year Gabby Gonzalez is committed to Ohio State, stands 6-foot-4 and gives Walton one of the top finishers in the country. In the 3-0 semifinal win over North Gwinnett, Gonzalez had a season-best 25 kills and showed off her versatility with five digs and a block. Milton is playing for its first state title and will need to have its best performance of the year to dethrone Walton. Milton junior Ashton Middleton has proved to be an outstanding setter and notched 61 assists in the Eagles 3-1 semifinal win over West Forsyth. Lassiter

ope hasn’t won a state title since capturing three-straight in 2009-11 and will face an Allatoona team that is in pursuit of taking home its program’s
first. Pope was defeated by Harrison 3-1 in last year’s semifinals and was paired up with the defending state champs in the opening round of this year’s playoffs. The Greyhounds got revenge with a 3-0 win and have carried the momentum through three more competitive rounds to reach the championship stage. Allatoona reached the semifinals without dropping a single set, and topped last year’s runner-up Alpharetta 3-1 to punch its ticket to the finals. Pope and Allatoona haven’t played this season, but they did square off last season in the Cobb County Tournament where Pope scored a 2-0 win (25-18, 25-20). Allatoona’s strengths are serving, and the one-two punch of junior Chamblee Russel and senior Emma Ahrens in the attack. Glynn Academy

cIntosh and Starr’s Mill will face off in an all-Region 3 championship and meet for the third time this year. The Chiefs defeated Starr’s Mill
2-0 in each of the previous two meetings, but the matches were extremely competitive (25-23, 25-20) and (25-20, 25-22). Whitewater took the No. 2 seed out of this top-notch region, but Starr’s Mill scored a 3-2 road win over the Wildcats in the semis to set up their rematch with McIntosh as the No. 3 seed. ace Academy and Westminster meet on the championship stage for the third straight season. The matchup went 3-2 in favor of Pace Academy
last year—giving the Knights their first-ever state title. Westminster defeated Pace Academy 3-1 in 2016 for its eighth all-time championship. As for this season, Westminster won the first of two meetings 2-1 on Sept. 4. The teams clashed again in the Area 4-AAA finals on Oct. 11, and Pace Academy defeated the Wildcats 3-1. One of the keys to Pace Academy’s victory in the most recent meeting was the outstanding play of sophomore setter Kalissa Greene, who handled a season-high 129 balls for a season-best 40 assists. Also, sophomore Hannah Pace registered 16 of the Knights’ 45 digs to lead the defensive effort. Westminster’s sophomore standout is Mary Emily Mor-

alvary Day joins Class AAAAAAA Walton as the only programs shooting for four-straight state titles this weekend, and will face Mt. Paran on the championship stage for the second year in a row in the restructured classification. Last year, the Cavaliers scored a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-16, 26-24) to prevent Mt. Paran from winning what would’ve been the first championship in Eagels’ history. This year’s Mt. Paran team has already posted 40 victories and is led by team captain Sarah-Hayes Farley, who is an outside hitter that can play the opposite position and get the attack going. The senior enters this match leading the Eagles in kills and digs and is second behind junior Bella Ferary in aces. Calvary Day has had to reload its attack this year after the graduation of Morgan Pearson and Sara Daniels, who tallied a combined 24 kills in last year’s finals. Stepping up has been sophomore Tynley Smeltzer and senior Basia Peragine.
