The GHSA is grateful for the host schools where these games are played, and we want to thank the administrators and their staffs for working to make these games special. The GHSA wants to thank the large number of volunteer workers who serve at these games to make them flow smoothly. Finally, we also want to thank our corporate partners and preferred vendors who enable the GHSA to produce these post-season events at a very high level of quality.

HSA football teams are competing to get to the much-anticipated state championship games at the Georgia Dome in fourteen different stadiums across the state. This is the second year of the expansion to six classifications and seven championships, and this change has provided added excitement to the GHSA playoff structure. The players and coaches have worked hard all year to get to this point in the season. Many of you have supported these teams in various ways this season, and that is an important part of the success of these teams. It is my desire that you enjoy your experience at these games, and that you demonstrate the highest levels of sportsmanship as you cheer on your team in a positive way.

he Peach State is full of talent. Look around this weekend and you will see some of the best high school football talent anywhere in the nation. The state of Georgia, by most expert accounts, produces the fourth-most college football players in America, behind only much larger states California (No. 1 in population), Texas (No. 2) and Florida (No. 4). Georgia, despite being only eighth in population, is fourth in producing college and NFL players. Just look at the rosters of the top college teams in America and you’ll see Peach State products all over the field. Alabama, which has won three of the past four national championships, routinely signs players from Georgia and is very dependent on players from this state to fill its roster. The Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, both regular bowl partici-

pants and conference contenders, each have the vast majority of their rosters filled with players from the home state. Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, South Carolina and Tennessee come here to recruit as if they each owned a piece of the state. In fact, programs as far away as Ohio State and Stanford regularly land planes on our red clay to find talent to supply their programs with great athletes. This year is no exception. Gainesville’s Deshaun Walton and Norcross’ Lorenzo Carter are two of the most highly-regarded seniors in the nation. Next year’s class is led by McEachern’s Chuma Edoga and North Gwinnett’s Austin Hyatt, who are widely regarded as two of the top linemen in the 2015 class. McEachern’s Taj Griffin, an electric running back, Callaway’s Terry Godwin, an elite defensive back prospect,

Griffin’s Christian Owens, one of America’s best wide receiver prospects, and Tucker’s Duke Shelley, a playmaker in all three facets of the game, are some of the top juniors in tonight’s games. As you can tell from the enormous box on this page, there are dozens of seniors in the state who will play major college football next year. And that box contains just commitments, not even top recruits. Some guys like Carter are being recruited by literally everyone, but have not committed and, therefore,

are not on the list. Keep an eye out, wherever you may be watching tonight, for college coaches. Big names like Les Miles, Nick Saban and Mark Richt have been known to drop in on Georgia high school games while prestigious academic schools like Vanderbilt, Duke, and dare I say, Harvard have been known to send coaches to scout the Peach State. NORCROSS VS. COLQUITT COUNTY Once again, coach Rush Propst has Colquitt County in the semifinals, the program’s fifth straight appearance. However, the Packers have yet to win a state title under their ultra-successful coach. Colquitt started the season with an impressive win over Grayson before losing to Propst’s former school, Hoover (Ala.), 24-17 in Week 2. A loss to Camden County on Nov. 8 cost the Packers a Region 1 title, which would’ve been their first under Propst. But, like the other semifinalists in Class AAAAAA, Colquitt came to life in the playoffs. The Packers took care of Newnan 41-10 in the first round, then dominated Region 4-champion North Cobb 52-6 in Round 2. In the quarterfinals, Colquitt County again travelled to metro Atlanta. This time, the Packers defeated Dacula 42-17 in another one-sided performance. Running back Sihiem King leads the Packers, while quarterback Daniel Mobley calls the signals for Propst’s spread offense. Ole Misscommitment Jamiyus Pittman anchors the Packers’ stout defensive line. Norcross won the Class AAAAAA title last season with an undefeated season. This year, however, it has not been quite as easy for coach Keith Maloof’s Blue Devils. Norcross lost to Washington (Fla.) on ESPN in the season-opener 55-0. After that forgettable performance, the Blue Devils lost to North Gwinnett 36-17 two games later. But since then, Norcross has been untouchable. Defensive end Lorenzo Charles, generally considered the top recruit in the state for 2014, Tennessee-commitment Kevin Mouhon and Maryland-commit Jordan Noil have led a smothering Norcross defense that has not allowed more than 20 points since the North Gwinnett defeat in Game 3. Milton-transfer A.J. Bush, meanwhile, has guided the Norcross offense to 28 points or more in all but one game since its last defeat.

McEACHERN VS. NORTH GWINNETT Both teams impressed the state right off the bat with victories in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic which kicked the season off in August. McEachern handled a good Brookwood team 31-10 and North Gwinnett spanked eventual Region 1-champion Camden County 34-14. Since, each team has suffered ups and downs. North Gwinnett won its first seven before losing to Collins Hill 53-28. The Bulldogs, however, recovered in time for the playoffs in which they have survived two consecutive close games. In its win over Archer in Round 2 coach Bob Sphire’s squad trailed 20-7, but came back and kicked a game-winning field goal with seven seconds left to win 34-32. The Bulldogs then had to rally from a 31-21 deficit in the fourth quarter last week in the quarterfinals against Hillgrove. Quarterback Hayden Sphire hit wide receiver Daniel Imatorbhebhe on a 10-yard pass with 1:10 left to give North Gwinnett the win. The Indians started off the season with a bang, winning their first seven games. But coach Kyle Hockman’s team lost twice in three games in the midseason, once to North Cobb on Oct. 18, then on Nov. 8 to Hillgrove. Once in the playoffs, however, McEachern has been running on all cylinders. The Indians beat Newton convincingly in the first round 36-21, then narrowly escaped a trip to Langston Hughes in the second round 22-21. Like the Sphires at North Gwinnett, the head coach’s son plays quarterback at McEachern. And freshman Bailey Hockman delivered for his father against Hughes, leading the Indians to two late fourth-quarter drives to beat their hosts after trailing 21-9 with six minutes left. In the quarterfinals, McEachern needed Hockman and junior running back Taj Griffin to overcome Collins Hill, which led the Indians with one minute to go before Griffin returned a punt 85 yards for the game-winning score.

CREEKSIDE VS. KELL In this battle of unbeatens, Kell and Creekside are coming off their most impressive wins of the season. The Longhorns scored a 52-28 victory over Warner Robins in the quarterfinals that marked Kell’s highest point total in playoff history. Jay Moxey erupted for three rushing touchdowns and Julian Burris rushed for a six-yard touchdown and returned a kickoff 97 yards for a score that extended the Longhorns’ advantage to 31-0. Moxey, Burris and Taylor Henkle are a few of the playmakers that will start both ways for Kell and they make up the Longhorns’ star-studded secondary. Seniors Austin Meaut and Ethan Elliott make up one of Georgia’s most productive pass-rushing duos. Behind a huge game from Elliott, Kell sacked Mays five times and forced a safety in its 26-15 second-round win. Offensively, quarterback Cameron Rosendahl found Henkle for an 80-yard touchdown pass in the quarterfinals. Rosendahl is having a productive season under center since taking over for injured senior Matthew McGuigan five games ago. Creekside’s defense turned in another dominant performance with a 41-14 win over North Paulding and the Seminoles have won 11 of 13 games by double-digits this year. The 14 points marked the first time an opponent held the Wolfpack under 27 points this season. Offensively, Creekside averages 40.5 points per game and is one of the highest-scoring units in the state. Senior Dexter Knox is a two-way starter at linebacker and running back who bulldozed his way to four rushing touchdowns in the quarterfinals. Dejuan Duncan scored on a touchdown pass from Felix Harper last round and twins Evan Berry and Elliott Berry (both are committed to Tennessee) can produce plays from both sides of the football. Creekside and Kell are both searching for their first state titles.

TUCKER VS. GAINESVILLE This matchup features the past two Class AAAAA state champions. Tucker topped Lovejoy 22-7 for the 2011 state title and Gainesville rolled over Ware County 49-13 last year. Gainesville quarterback Deshaun Watson holds the state passing records for career yardage and touchdowns and is having another historic season. Watson passed for 344 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for two scores in the Red Elephants’ 42-28 quarterfinals win over Mundy’s Mill. Gainesville has scored 28 or more points in 10 consecutive playoff games dating to 2011 and is averaging 49.2 points per game this year. Watson and backup Mikey Gonzalez have combined for 56 passing touchdowns and just five interceptions. Rodney Lackey, Jay Gaudlock, Chastin Newman and Orrin Ragland are Watson’s favorite targets and Michael Byrd averages more than seven yards per carry out of the backfield. Tucker averages 45 points per game offensively, but it is the defensive side of the football that has made the Tigers a state championship favorite this year. Tucker recorded a 29-0 shutout in the quarterfinals, holding Ware County to just three first downs. Cornerback Duke Shelley returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown and the pass rushed forced an intentional grounding in the endzone for a safety. Tucker’s speed and physicality starts with linebacker and Georgia-commit Detric Dukes. Defensive linemen Elisha Shaw and Jonathan Ledbetter dominate the line of scrimmage. Stanfordcommit Kirk Tucker makes plays at outside linebacker and safety Dominick Sanders is one of the top playmakers in the state. Offensively, Tucker quarterback Joe Farrar rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the quarterfinals and has plenty of explosive playmakers around him. This will be the first time these established programs will meet on the gridiron.

GRIFFIN VS. WAYNE COUNTY Griffin’s 32-26 comeback win at Sandy Creek in the quarterfinals was one of the biggest victories in any classification this season. The Bears handed the Patriots, who won three state titles the last four seasons, their first home loss since 2008. Griffin quarterback Jaquez Parks was efficient, completing 8-of-9 passes for 125 yards in the fourth quarter and orchestrating two scoring drives to erase a 26-17 deficit. Griffin’s Jordan Colbert returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown and teammate Nic Williams sealed the Bears’ win with an interception on Sandy Creek’s final drive. These two defenders will be matched up with Wayne County’s star wideout Krenwick Sanders. Sanders is having a record-setting postseason after adding four more touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets’ 51-21 win over Alexander in the quarterfinals. Sanders tallied 279 yards receiving and six touchdowns in Wayne County’s 49-34 win over Monroe-Albany in the first round and returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown in the Yellow Jackets’ 20-17 victory over Veterans in the second round. Sanders is committed to play at Wisconsin next fall. Florida State-commit Malique Johnson quarterbacks Wayne County’s offense and can extend plays and connect with the athletic Sanders. A.J. McGill and Anfernee Jordan each ran for touchdowns against Alexander. Griffin’s offense has scored at least 32 points in every game this season and Bears’ running back Mikell Lands-Davis rushed for 310 yards and five touchdowns in their second-round victory over Lanier. The Yellow Jackets are in the semifinals for the first time in school history and are 4-0 on the road this season. Griffin’s defense has held four of its last five opponents to less than seven points per game and its 9.4 points average is the best in its class.

MARIST VS. CARROLLTON Marist won the Class AAAA state title in 2003 and Carrollton’s last state title came in 1998. These teams met last season in the second round and resulted in the longest game of the 2012 season. Marist edged the Trojans at home in a 43-37 five-overtime thriller. The War Eagles hold a 50-2 record at home in playoff games since 1987. Marist averages more than 320 yards rushing per game in its option-based offense and lineman Kendall Baker, who has committed to Georgia, leads a defense that allows just above 100 rushing yards per game. Marist’s rushing attack was on full display in the quarterfinals as the War Eagles trounced Burke County 42-20 without attempting a single pass. The War Eagles rushed for 429 yards, led by Chase Martenson’s 162 yards and four touchdowns. Marist head coach Alan Chadwick has led the War Eagles to the semifinals 11 times. The Trojans were quiet offensively in the quarterfinals against Stockbridge, but made enough plays to earn a 24-14 win. Carrollton managed 195 yards, all on the ground and quarterback Wil Garrett attempted just one pass, which was intercepted. Sophomore Jarvis Terrell led Carrollton on the ground with 86 rushing yards and included a 44-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Trojans head coach Rayvan Teague runs a Wing-T offense that uses multiple backs. Trey Chivers and Malik Sheppard share the bulk of the carries with Terrell. While Marist has Georgia-commit Baker at its disposal, Carrollton has 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive tackle and Dontavius Russell in the trenches. Watching these two battle in the trenches is one of the most intriguing position battles in the state this weekend. While Carrollton piles up the carries, N.C. State-commit Cole Cook creates a dangerous play-action threat.

BUFORD VS. CALLAWAY Callaway will travel to Buford to play the top-ranked Wolves who have been obliterating teams thus far in the playoffs. Buford is the defending state AAA champion and has won five titles in the past six years. Head coach Jess Simpson is in pursuit of his sixth state title with Buford and has only lost 18 games in his nine seasons with the Wolves. Callaway’s football program is much less storied as it has not won a state championship in the school’s brief 16-year history. Head coach Michael Wiggins has had his team focused this year as they’ve only lost one game, a loss early in the season to Harris County. Both teams had impressive quarterfinal victories. Buford was able to down Carver-Columbus 36-6 while Callaway beat St. Pius X 35-21. Buford’s defense has been relentless all year, including last week when the Wolves forced three turnovers including an interception returned for a touchdown. Special teams were also on display as the Wolves were able to block a punt for great field position. Buford defender Evyn Cooper was especially active in the game as he was able to run back a fumble for a touchdown. Wolves quarterback Taylor Mitchell took care of things on the offensive side of the ball with a rushing and passing touchdown. Callaway’s defense was also impressive this year as it didn’t allow more than three touchdowns in any of its regular season games while the offense averaged 37 points a game. Buford turned the ball over four times in its last game, the most of the season. If fifth-ranked Callaway has any chance of winning, it will have to take the ball away often. Callaway has only played Buford once in the playoffs and that was a 52-14 shellacking in the second round en route to Buford winning its fourth state title in a row in 2010.

WASHINGTON COUNTY VS. RINGGOLD Washington County will host Ringgold in the other AAA semifinal matchup, and according to GHSFA, this will be the first meeting between the two teams. The Golden Hawks are hoping to continue their run to their first state championship since 1997. The school has won three titles since opening in 1955, and head coach Joel Ingram has it on track to contend for its fourth. Ringgold has never won the state title in its 69-year history, but coach Robert Akins hopes to keep the Tigers’ improbable run alive. Washington County, which is undefeated, will depend on Melvin Hill who rushed for 202 yards and five touchdowns in the Golden Hawks’ win against Blessed Trinity last Friday. On the other side of the ball Ringgold will have to worry about a very impressive defense led by D.J. Sanders, who managed to pick off four passes in his last game. Ringgold is the Cinderella of the tournament as it is the only team left that was unranked going into the playoffs. After winning a thrilling 55-54 contest against North Hall, Ringgold posted back to back routs and has beaten its opponents by a combined 50 points in games against Cedar Grove and Central-Carroll. Ringgold will hope that quarterback Slade Dale will be good to go Friday after suffering a leg injury late in the first half of the game against Central-Carroll. Dale was able to score two touchdowns before missing the entire second half due to the injury. The Tigers will hope to upset Washington County and continue this unbelievable run, but they’ll have to slow down a productive Golden Hawks offense which has scored 36 points or more in every game so far this year. Ringgold was able to recover a fumble and intercept a pass against Central-Carroll and it will take that kind of an effort to win this game.

LAMAR COUNTY VS. BENEDICTINE Coach Franklin Stephens came to Lamar County in 2012 and hasn’t done anything but win since. After a 12-win season last year, the Trojans have won 13 this year. This nearly-perfect record comes on the heels of an ultra-successful tenure at Tucker, where he won 13 or more games four times in five seasons. Stephens’ 92.3 winning percentage is among the best-ever in state annals through at least five seasons coached. At Lamar County, Stephens set the school’s all-time mark for wins in a season this year, passing the old mark of 12, which was set in 2011 by previous coach Jason Strickland and matched by Stephens in 2012. This season has been the Trojans’ best ever, as they have yet to lose a game. Lamar County also matched its all-time best by reaching the state semifinals for the second straight season. The Trojans had never been that far prior to Stephens’ arrival. On the other side of the field tonight is another program that is on a run of success rarely seen in program history. Coach Danny Britt has guided Benedictine to its most wins ever (13) and second semifinals appearance ever (according to GHSFHA.org. The other came in 1978). Benedictine, a private, all-male military school located in Savannah, has made the playoffs in each of Britt’s three seasons. The Cadets dropped to Class AA from AAAAA after the 2011 season due to reclassification. Benedictine surprised perennial-power Calhoun last week to the tune of a 35-14 blowout. The win prevented Calhoun from reaching its sixth consecutive state final. Benedictine caused six Yellow Jackets turnovers and relied on the running of fullback Kyle South, running back J.J. Gaines and Mike Huggins, a trio which helped the Cadets rush for 262 yards. Benedictine’s defense has not allowed more than 15 points in a game and has pitched five shutouts.

LOVETT VS. BROOKS COUNTY Brooks County has been one of the most consistent programs in Class AA. However, the Trojans have not won a state title in the classification - yet. The program won its only state title as a member of Class A in 1994. Coach Maurice Freeman’s program is back in the semifinals after an impressive season. The Trojans won 12 games this season against just one loss, which came to a Valdosta program that is four classifications above them. It is the third time Freeman has led the Trojans to a 12-win season. Brooks County is led by do-it-all athlete Malkom Parrish, the team’s quarterback who also returns punts. Parrish, who is committed to Georgia as a cornerback, is a dual-threat signal-caller that racks up yardage and touchdowns both through the air and on the ground. The Trojans have scored less than 20 just once this year and more than 30 10 times. Lovett, simply put, played one of the toughest schedules ever in Class AA this season. The Lions did not play a non-playoff team from Georgia until region play and faced five teams from a higher classification (not counting Fort Payne of Alabama, which plays in a higher classification in that state). Not only did coach Mike Muschamp’s team play top competition, it beat those teams. Well, all but Class AAA semifinalist Washington County, which edged the Lions in overtime. Lovett is a well-balanced team that features running back/defensive back Grant Haley, a Vanderbilt commitment. Haley is the star on both sides of the ball. He has rushed for 1,300 yards and 20 scores this year while also leading the team with five interceptions. Quarterback Willie Candler has been efficient for the Lions in throwing for 1,156 yards and 13 scores against three interceptions. Candler has also rushed for 465 yards and seven scores.

Get your popcorn ready for another showdown between Region 2-A rivals Irwin County and Charlton County. The teams just faced each other on Nov. 8 at Irwin County, where the host Indians prevailed 29-26 on a last-second field goal. The semifinal clash will again be held at Irwin County (10-1-1), which is in the last four of the state tournament for the first time since 1997. Arguably the state’s most unbalanced offense is on display when the Indians take the field, but that is not to say it is a weakness. In fact, their offense is a juggernaut. The Indians have run the ball more than 500 times this season for 4,273 yards and 59 touchdowns. They have not required any kind of passing attack (308 yards and four touchdowns through the air in 2013). Both Jakyron Young and Antuane Merritt have amassed more than 1,000 rushing yards and have scored double-digit touchdowns. Head coach Jonathan Lindsey has had his program on the rise since taking over at Irwin County in 2011. The team had compiled three straight losing seasons but the rebuilding process took just one year, as the Indians went 3-7 in 2011 then 7-4 in 2012. Charlton County had not been to the semifinals since 2006, but this team is invoking memories of the glory days under head coach Rich McWhorter. The Indians (8-4) captured state titles in 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2006. McWhorter assumed the reins back in 1990. Since starting 2-2, Charlton County has played its best football. It saved its most impressive performance for last, destroying No. 1 seed and previously-unbeaten Seminole County 42-0 in the quarterfinals. Unlike Irwin County, Charlton County utilizes a pass-happy offense. It is led by quarterback Trae Harrington and sophomore running back Andrew Lee.

GHSA 2013 STATE FOOTBALL SEMIFINALS

ELCA VS. CALVARY DAY All of the top four seeds advanced to the Class A-Private semifinals, and one of the two showdowns pits No. 1 ELCA against No. 4 Calvary Day. Whereas ELCA is defending a state championship and has reached the semis three straight years, Calvary Day is through to its first state semifinal appearance in history. Jordan Long is the quarterback for ELCA (11-0), which has won 24 consecutive games dating back to its second contest of the 2012 campaign. Former starter Dalton Etheridge suffered a broken leg during first-round action. Long, a sophomore who made his first varsity start against Darlington in the quarterfinals, threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to star receiver Jamal Tookes. The Chargers also boast an outstanding running game that has and should continue to help make up for Etheridge’s absence. Lane Timpson leads a ground attack that racked up more than 400 yards in the win over Darlington. A positively dominant ELCA squad is averaging 39.8 points per outing and only twice has it allowed more than seven points. He may not care about any talk of a dynasty, but seventh-year head coach Jonathan Gess appears to be building one. Calvary Day (10-2) has won 10 in a row since losing its first two games of the season. None of its eight regular-season victories came by fewer than 26 points. The Cavaliers are led by quarterback Michael Peterson, tight end Milan Richard and running back Robert Heyward. Richard, nephew of former University of Georgia legend Herschel Walker, has committed to Clemson. Peterson had eight touchdown passes in his first two playoff games, four to Derek Kirkland. In his third season as head coach, Mark Stroud also has a solid defense on his hands. Calvary Day has limited nine of its last 10 opponents to 14 points or fewer.

MT. PISGAH VS. AQUINAS The winner of this game will play in its first-ever state football final after these two undefeated teams collide. Now in its fifth year as a member of the GHSA, Mount Pisgah Christian (12-0) had never won a playoff game in its history prior to this season. Steady improvement saw the Patriots improve from 4-6 in 2011 to 6-5 in 2012, a year in which they reached the postseason for the first time (lost to Athens Academy 17-13). They have soared to even greater heights in Mike Forester’s first season as head coach. Forester, previously the team’s defensive coordinator, has led the Patriots to an unblemished record that includes two playoff victories—over St. Anne-Pacelli and Holy Innocents’. Junior quarterback Aaron Winchester has passed for more than 2,200 yards in 2013 to go along with 31 touchdowns compared to a mere four interceptions. Winchester accounted for six total touchdowns against St. Anne-Pacelli and Ben Miller caught four of his quarterback’s five scoring strikes. Mount Pisgah Christian has scored at least 39 points in six games this season and it has limited opponents to seven points or fewer six times. Aquinas (12-0) is coming off a 35-32 win over Mount Paran Christian in which it led 35-14 at halftime. The Fightin’ Irish had two 100-yard rushers in their quarterfinal victory, even though star junior running back Ruben Garnett went down early with a strained Achilles’ tendon. Daniel Lindsey rushed for 105 yards before succumbing to cramps and John Morris gained 103 while scoring once on the ground and once via a reception. Quarterback Liam Welch (two passing touchdowns, one touchdown run) also played a huge part in leading Aquinas to its first state semifinal berth in school history. Head coach James Leonard said Garnett will be good to go for the semifinals.
