Discover Sensors Award winners SciFest GMIT 2009 Triona Ni Dhomhnaill, Laura Mahon, and Maeve Lavelle, St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Castlebar, being presented with their award by Tom Bolger (Discover Sensors Judge).
Regional News SciFest helps promote Science and Engineering in St Flannan’s, Ennis, Co Clare Exhibiting at SciFest has had a very positive effect on students from St Flannan’s College in Limerick, encouraging some to compete in other science related competitions and others to pursue science or engineering at third level. Bram Siebert and Benjamin Suarez who were awarded First Place in Technology, SciFest 2009 LIT for their project ‘Incandescent vs Fluorescent Light Bulbs’ are both now working on another creative engineering competition. Conor Arkins was awarded Highly Commended in the Junior Category of SciFest 2009 LIT for his project ‘KSI Kitchen Science Investigation’ and is now in second year. He loves science and is a very active member of the school science club. Francisco Parga was Highly Commended in the Senior Category for his project ‘DNA Pen - The stability of horse DNA in various inks’ and is now studying Aeronautical Engineering in Bath University, UK. In addition Brendan Golden who got a Most Promising Scientist Award in SciFest 2008 LIT is now a regional finalist in the F1-in-schools motor car design competition sponsored by ICS and Discover Science and Engineering . Two other teams competing at junior level in CIT on March 2nd are also from St. Flannan's Science Club. Tim Horgan was Highly Commended in Senior Level Physics in SciFest 2008 LIT for his project ‘Insulation Properties of various materials’ is now studying Health and Safety at UL.
