DR. KESHISHIAN'S MESSAGE I want to first and foremost welcome everyone back to in-person education. It has a been an interesting time in everyone's educational career dealing with the pandemic. I want to commend the fine work done by the teachers, administrators, and all academy members, but most importantly the students who never gave up and continued to grow within the science and the Academies. This newsletter is a testament to the hard work and dedication done by all. I also want to say a special thanks to our partners, who are mentioned throughout this newsletter, who continued to give North Bergen students opportunities during these past 18 months and we look forward to continue to work with you. I am always reminded of the quote by Walt Disney on which the Academies core ideas are based, "Around here, however, we don't look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious … and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths."

A Unique Opportunity for North Bergen Students to Talk to Space! NB Schools and Community Watch Live Downlink With Astronauts Vande Hei and Kimbrough On September 24th, 2021, students at North Bergen STEM and STEAM Academies posed questions and received answers live from NASA International Space Station's Astronauts Mark T. Vande Hei and Shane Kimbrough. These six students were part of a 30-student/ six school NY Metro School Team named NYC-NJ UNITE! Back in January 2021, our six schools with teachers from NASA's Climate Change Research Initiative (CCRI) decided to "unite our students to be part of something bigger than all of us, in order to show that we are diverseyet-unified at the same time in our commitment to educating youth in STEM possibilities," stated Stephanie Stern-Protz, NASA CCRI Legacy Teacher and CCRI Education Ambassador.

"We are honored that Mayor and State Senator Nicholas Sacco was able to give the closing remarks to almost 7,000 viewers during the event," Dr. Solter - Superintendent of Schools The STEM and STEAM Academies had 20-plus submissions of questions from students wanting to know more about life on the space station and the science and engineering the astronauts took part in maintaining in near-zero gravity. Students were also looking for insight to life in space. Of these submissions, six students were chosen to ask questions of the astronauts to answer. Four students were from the newly-opened North Bergen STEAM Academy Middle School and two were students from the North Bergen STEM Academy - now in its seventh year open. Benjamin Diaz, Samuel Diaz, Zahraa Elmansoury, Emily Estrada, Aaliyah Garcia and Hailey Hernandez all took part in filming video questions to be answered live on NASA TV and the NASA Stream. "The answers the astronauts gave were informative, entertaining, and inspiring to motivate all North Bergen young learners to shoot for the stars and travel through the cosmos as they grow up," stated Dr. Keshishian, District Director of Science for North Bergen.

Mayor Sacco announced to the jubilant crowd that our Valedictorian, Ms. Vimbisai Basvi, was accepted to Yale University as a Computer Science major, and our Salutatorian, Mishael Hernandez was accepted to Syracuse University as an 1870 Scholar. Arleen Inclan, third in the class, had multiple offers from 99% of the schools she applied to, and she accepted Fairleigh Dickinson University's Business major. Edu Pena Rollet is also attending Syracuse, Amanda Zerquera is off to Drexel, Laisha Martinez is attending Felician University, Michael Moscoso at Monmouth U, Roberto Perez at UMASS Amherst, Briana Classen is Presidential Scholar at NJCU, Andrew Carmona is studying at Montclair State University, and rounding out this outstanding class of STEM graduates is Adreanny Sihombing - a student accepted to every Technical Institute offered to her. She is starting out in Essex and will co-matriculate at the Institute of Technology of her choice. Congrats to all!

After over a year of careful planning, the NB STEAM Academy Middle School Opens!
STEAM is open to North Bergen residents' children! If you have a fourth grade or middle school child in any of our town grammar schools, they have the opportunity to apply to the STEAM Academy Middle School of North Bergen. Students are assessed through multiple measures in order to show off their best and brightest abilities. These measures are then placed in a Metric scoring system that uses no student name - just the scores, in order to maintain transparency. Meet the STEAM Academy Teachers Ms. Karina Diaz - 5th Grade Math and Science
My name is Ms. Diaz and I graduated from Montclair State University. I am fluent in Spanish and have taught in diverse classrooms, including bilingual and inclusive classrooms. I address my class as Team Diaz, as I view us as a strong unit. I am incredibly grateful to have built strong and rewarding bonds with my students thus far. A key aspect of my pedagogy is that students are actively engaged in the learning process. Along this journey, I hope to enable your children to believe in themselves and fall in love with learning! Mrs. Stephanie LeJeune Teta - 5th Grade English and Social Studies Hi everyone! My name is Stephanie LeJeune and I am the new S.T.E.A.M. teacher! I am so thrilled to be part of the S.T.E.A.M. Academy! A little bit about me! I grew up in North Bergen and attended Horace Mann School as a child. I graduated from North Bergen High School- Class of 2000! The incredible teachers I had in North Bergen inspired me to become a teacher. I started my career at Horace Mann School as a 6th-grade teacher and loved every minute of it! Then a wonderful opportunity arose where I became the gifted and talented P.E.A.K. teacher for grades 5 & 6. We did amazing things both inside and outside of the classroom. We explored various habitats such as Sandy Hook Beach where we went fish seining and hiked trails at Scherman Hoffman Sanctuary where we learned about forests, deer and bears. We competed in multiple competitions such as Battle of the Books, Crime Scene Investigations, Academic Bowl, STEM challenges, and Forensics. I have a deep passion for learning and teaching. I am currently enrolled at The College of New Jersey working towards completing my 2nd master’s degree, which will be in iSTEM Education. Meet the STEAM Academy Teachers Ms. Lauren Sastre - 6th Grade English and Social Studies Hi! My name is Ms. Sastre, and I am so excited to be a part of STEAM Academy this year at Kennedy School. More importantly, I am thrilled to be YOUR teacher! It’s going to be a fun year full of learning and new experiences. Some things I would like you to know about me is that I am very passionate about teaching and challenging young minds like yourselves to think outside the box. With this new program, we will be doing just that every day! This will be my 9th year teaching, and I have primarily taught 6th grade ELA. I have a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, with a specialization in Reading. Outside of the classroom, I love staying active with my daughter and shopping at Target. Mrs. Heather Ricco - 6th Grade Math and Science My name is Mrs. RIcco and have been a teacher in the North Bergen School District since 2001. I graduated from New York’s Queens College with a degree in English and Urban Studies. After a successful tenure in the corporate world, through stints in fashion, legal, and entertainment, I found my calling as an elementary teacher in the early 2000’s. I received a Master’s degree in the Science of Education, graduating at the top of my class. I am a member of New Jersey STEM Pathways Network, Liberty STEM Ecosystem, and sit on the STEM Early Childhood committee. I have collaborated with STEAMTANK, the partnership between the Department of Education and the US Army for STEAM education. In addition, I was the math lead teacher for my grade level for the past five years and am a designated math teacher for the Hudson County Curriculum Consortium. Welcome to the High School STEM Frosh and Sophs Both classes new to the building because of COVID
We want to make a special welcome to our classes of 2024 and 2025. Our sophomores are just as new to the North Bergen High School as our Freshman are, and we have been getting all into their "groove" finding classrooms in the building to settling into their new lockers. We've assigned our kiddos teacher mentors and have them busily into their clubs, sports, music, art and university happenings. In addition, we've got some of them working on special research projects and finishing up summer assignments. We are very proud of the way the STEM underclassmen adapted during COVID and wanted to take this moment to thank both students and families for working with us during this most difficult time.
STOMP 'EM OUT Ms. Q's Students at Fulton Helping to Oust a Pest from the Pacific The next time you happen to see a very colorful gray, pink and black moth, you have the New Jersey Department of Agriculture's permission to smash it. The bug is a Chinese Spotted Lanternfly and it is an invasive species to North America that has nested a home here in the Northeast. Students in Ms. Quinones' (Ms. Q's) class have been making time to find and stomp out this plant-predator in order to keep them from ruining vegetation. 9th Grade STEM students held a class discussion with PhD student researcher, Ms. Lizzie Billington, all the way in the UK through the Skype-A-Scientist Program! Ms. Billington is with Roslin and Pirbirght Institutes working on understanding bird flu and the effects of the PB1-F2 protein in viruses. The STEM students, along with the other two sections of Biology Honors were tasked to read and understand a published scientific article which they then discussed with the authors of these papers via Google Meet!

Major Research Award Granted to North Bergen STEM Academy Through Dr. Boris Khusid at NJIT Important Announcement from the Academy North Bergen has been granted the opportunity to take part in two investigations, thanks to the generosity of Dr. Boris Khusid, a Chemical Engineer and Physicist, who is a senior professor at NJIT and who has had two major experimental apparatuses fly to the International Space Station. Under the tutelage of Dr. Keshishian and Coordinated by Mrs. Stern-Protz, students have met and will study Fluid Dynamics in its relation to keeping electronics cool during long space flight. "NASA made a courageous step in that they included the students as part of a NASA Space Technology Grant and they will not only get to study thermo fluid dynamics, they will present their design ideas directly to Dr. Khusid at New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Thrilled to Be Back In the Labs! "The COVID pandemic kept us sidelined for a while, but we are at the lab, materials either inhand or on their way, and the students are elated. We originally wanted six students to research, but we had greater interest, so we have about 10-11 young learners," explained Mrs. Stern-Protz. Before becoming District Supervisor of Science and Manager of STEM.STEAM for North Bergen, Dr. Keshishian was an advanced chemistry teacher at the High School and is looking forward to teaching the basics of Exo/Endo thermic reactions and Open/Closed Cooling Systems. "We are grateful for the opportunity to get our students fully involved in designing and testing the cooling of electronics and presenting our work. We are committed to this project and the students are jumping right in." More updates to follow as the lab demos and lessons continue!
More Great News!, North Bergen Awarded By National Science Foundation Through NJIT! Lots of Research Happening at the Academy! North Bergen will be working with NJIT and learning along with a high school near Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute about Boiling Water in Near-Zero Gravity A Research Topic More Familiar to Mrs. SP Back in 2014, Mrs. Stern-Protz (SP) had the privilege of working under Dr. Khusid in Boiling on Small Heaters in Earth and Low Gravity. The poster was presented to the New York City Research Institute (NYCRI) before it became the Climate Change Research Initiative (CCRI). Dr. Khusid has been very generous in extending an opportunity to North Bergen Students to be part of a larger and longer term (4 year) study in this technology through the National Science Foundation. Boiling Water is Important in Space "This four-year study will allow us to create a series of lesson plans, culminating in a unit on near-zero-gravity and heating water. We will be able to study water in vacuous conditions in the laboratory using old technology (bell jar) to study current phenomena," explained Dr. Keshishian - lead teacher in the study. Mrs. Stern-Protz added that "working with a team from Troy, NY - we will enhance and extend learning beyond the classroom, and that's what STEM Academy is all about." Dr. George Solter acknowledges that "Our relationship with NJIT has only grown over the past seven years of STEM Academy, and we hope to build on this with the new STEAM Academy middle school." Once again, thanks to Dr. Brandy Garrett-Kluthe at Saint Peter's University for thinking of our students through the SURGE Grant for Ecological and Environmental Studies. Our students each spent about 25 hours creating a trophic space of about 3M x 3M and counted flora and fauna in that area. Afterward, students used mathematics to determine if the area was balanced between consumers and producers. Lastly, students studied the geographic information surrounding their study area and created slideshow presentations of their work shown here. Big thanks to Mrs. Hojnowski who created the Formative lesson giving the students opportunity for real-world investigation and analysis. Mrs. SP designed the GIS investigation. A HIGH SCHOOL INTENSIVE IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Developed and taught by Stanford and MIT alumni and graduate students.

I really enjoyed taking part in the Inspirit AI program! It was challenging and fast paced but I learned a lot and am really happy to have been able to have that experience. I was able to make connections and learn a lot from people from different branches of the Computer Science field. In the last week of the program we were assigned a final project to explore and work on based on the experience level and interests we had. I was placed in a mental health chatbot project and learned a lot about AI's and how different types of networks have benefits and flaws as well as how to compensate for the weaknesses of certain programs. It was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it especially since you can be placed in advanced groups and projects or ones that are paces a little slower. We are able to keep the Google Colab notebooks with practice cells and a walkthrough. We had a couple of our coding instructors each day that would give presentations on their career paths and college experience. My favorite part was that during our coding class we were put in breakout rooms where there would be 4-5 students and an instructor. Our instructor would have each of us present our screen for a couple of minutes then have us switch presenters so we could work on the notebooks together, that way no one would get left behind and we could learn from each other's mistakes and solutions. It was a great program and I am very happy with the material covered as well as the friends I made.
Olha B Inspirit AI surely offers many new experiences, opportunities and friendships. However, the first thing I noticed was organization. The program was simply one of the best organized programs I have ever attended: the timing, the communication, the learning environment; a lot of thought was put into each of the aspects. One of my biggest gains, besides the knowledge and skills, turned out to be a community. The learning process occurred in small groups with well versed instructors who welcomed our questions and encouraged our thoughts. The environment was welcoming from the beginning, and as the ice broke we all were getting more and more comfortable with each other. However, not only communication within the groups was supported, the process was set up in a way that any student was able to ask a question, post a project opportunity, or simply wish good luck to the fellow students on an online designated forum. This way all students were able to receive help from both other students and instructors, as well as find like minded individuals to befriend, or work with on personal projects. As a result, I ended up finding friends from all over the US who were easy and comfortable to work with, and who I keep in touch with until this day.

STEM Academy joins the North Bergen HS Athletic Department in congratulating MiguelDavid Cabrera for representing Hudson County in the All-Star Game this past summer.
Congratulations to Jose Matos and his team for completing the ALI Leadership Summer Institute. Mussab Ali, the youngest Muslim voted to office (Jersey City BOE President) began the institute to address the need for young urban students to become aware of regional, national and local challenges, and to make grassroot efforts to address them as a team. Jose and his team were awarded $800 to create a solution to something they believe can improve Hudson County.
Congrats go to coaches Jimmy Somick, Edwin Ventura and Javier Romero, and our Lady Bruins Soccer team for making it to the County Championship game! The game was held at Red Bull Stadium on October 28th. Although the Lady Bruin fought hard, Kearny took the win and we will plan on being back next year! We'd like to recognize Daniela Poaquiza, Tatiana Nunez, and Daniela Giraldo - our STEM Academy juniors on the team, and a special shout-out to Briana Classen, STEM graduate and former soccer teammate, now attending New Jersey City University on the Presidential Scholarship!
