Maths Overview

Our intent is to provide children with a broad and balanced curriculum, which builds on their needs and prepares them for the future. Fluency, problem solving and reasoning are also key skills which are developed through a concrete, pictoral and abstract approach. • Mathematical thinking • Coherence Detailed curriculum sequencing supports all to progress through small step approach.

Retrieval Practice • Flashback 4 approach. • Knowledge, skills and vocabulary identified • Low stakes quizzing to develop long term memory. • Deepening knowledge initiative allows for retrieval of theme based knowledge and learning beyond this. • Key concepts are revisited • Vertical and horizontal links across the curriculum supported by shared understanding of retrieval practice strategies.

Maths at YPS Content and Sequencing

Our approach to teaching maths is through a mastery approach incorporating the 5 Big ideas. This is supported by White Rose materials and subsidised with additional high quality materials from NCETM’s prioritisation documentation. White Rose provides a coherent approach to teaching maths, ensuring coverage of National Curriculum objectives. However, we are aware of the need to make deeper connections and the need for adaptation of small steps, hence the addition of other resources. White Rose supports in the development of vocabulary through the use of sentence stems and guidance supports teachers in recognising possible misconceptions. Again NCETM will support in ‘micro-steps’ of these misconceptions.

Outcomes

Lesson sequences have clear outcomes with steps for success identified. Flashback approach enables children to recall learning and build upon it. Problem solving and reasoning opportunities are embedded. Investigations and games are used to develop skills and understanding.

Inclusion

Everyone has access to the Maths National Curriculum. Support is provided for those learners who require it, including physical adaptations. All learners have access to manipulatives should they be required and individuals learning needs are catered for.
