Our Geography curriculum is designed to provoke a curiosity, fascination and understanding about the world and it’s many diverse communities, which will equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills to be responsible global citizens and enquiring young geographers. Expression of findings, conclusions and opinions both orally and in written form Directional language, coordinates, statistic and time Use of maps to support orienteering in PE Explicit links to science through geology and animal/human environments and life processes.

Retrieval Practice

• Knowledge, skills and vocabulary identified • Low stakes quizzing to develop long term memory. • Deepening knowledge initiative allows for retrieval of theme based knowledge and learning beyond this. • Key concepts are revisited • Vertical and horizontal links across the curriculum supported by shared understanding of retrieval practice strategies. • Knowledge Organisers used to support recall and retention.

Content and Sequencing

• At least 2 half termly units a year • Content of the National curriculum and current geographical climate KS1 Study of locality • Y1 study their own locality (Yarm)and a contrasting locality • Y2 study a contrasting non-European locality (Different Islands) KS1 Study of Human and Physical Processes • Countries, capital cities of the UK and continents of the world • Y1 environments and biomes • Y2 physical and human features around the world KS2 Study of Human and Physical Processes • Y3 volcanoes, Y4 mountains, Y5 Brazil, Y6 trade and world resources, Rivers KS2 Study of locality • Y3 Borneo (volcano link), Y4 Scandinavia (contrasting locality Europe), Y5 Amazon Rainforest and Brazil • Response to current geographical climate and application of geographical skills and knowledge

Outcomes

All units begin with an enquiry questions which children should be able to answer at the end of the unit. At the end of the unit children with complete a task which gives them the opportunity to apply all their geographical knowledge and understanding.

Inclusion

Every child in school has access to the Geography National Curriculum. Support is provided for those learners who require it, including thought around fieldwork and how it is accessible for all. Considerations are given for learners who grasp concepts more rapidly, to encourage children to gain a greater depth of understanding.
