Year 1 Class Information

Reading Books are changed weekly, in-line with the recommendations of our chosen phonic scheme ELS. Books will be changed on a Friday and will feature the phonic codes taught that week. In addition to this your child will bring home a book to share to develop a real love of reading. It is your child’s responsibility to place it in the red reading box so that it can be changed. Please help your child to practise their reading book every night (just a few pages or a short story) and sign and date the reading record book, showing the page reached or book finished. If your child reads a minimum of 4 times a week they will receive a ticket that goes into our termly remarkable readers prize draw. There is room to write a comment about your child’s reading (using the reading VIPERS bookmark will offer a structure support your child and will help to inform comments). In addition to this children will consolidate their early reading skills through our phonics sessions. Some children may require further support at this stage and will participate in a programme of learning known as “Precision Teach” or additional catch up phonic sessions. This is a daily session held on a one to one to help with the rapid recall of words/letters/numbers. Parents can help at home by practising these as well. Children in Year One will participate in a group guided reading session reading age appropriate decodable texts in class which then will be brought home on Friday to build fluency and confidence. The main aim of our reading and phonics approach is to get children reading, quickly.
