I am proud to be the Acting Headteacher at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Primary School, a place that holds a special place in my heart and brings me great happiness every single day. At St. John’s, we are dedicated to offering a meaningful, forward-thinking, and inclusive curriculum. We cherish our students and honour the diverse range of experiences, needs, interests, and accomplishments they bring. Our goal is for students to leave St. John’s with a deeper knowledge, better retention, and greater understanding of the world around them.
We believe it is crucial for all our children to learn about and take pride in St. John’s and its heritage. Engaging in local festivals and activities helps create a sense of pride in their community and encourages them to become positive contributors to Billingham. Moreover, we aim to expand our students’ perspectives by making them aware of the broader world and the lives of others globally.
Our objective is for all our pupils to gain a thorough understanding of the academic content of the curriculum while also learning how to be socially, morally, spiritually, and culturally responsible. The curriculum we provide is designed to cater to the varied needs of all our students. It is comprehensive, diverse, and creative, effectively meeting the needs of each individual learner.
At St. John’s, we are committed to teaching a curriculum that not only fulfils academic requirements but also prepares our students to be conscientious, informed, and engaged members of society.
“This is a school where relationships are strong and everyone is looked after.”
“Leaders continue to develop an ambitious curriculum that is right for their pupils.” Ofsted
As an inclusive school, all teachers are teachers of pupils with special educational needs & disabilities (SEND). We deliver a curriculum and create an environment that meets the needs of every pupil within our school. We ensure that every pupil with SEND makes the best progress possible. We foster and promote effective working partnerships with parents, carers, pupils, and outside agencies. We consider the ‘whole’ child and strive to ensure that all our SEND pupils are prepared for adulthood.
Nurture Room
Since being re-purposed in November 2018, the nurture room is well and truly established as a valuable resource within St. John’s. It is used daily by a variety of children who may require a calm, safe space in which to talk or relax. Mrs Cox has been working with children over the last year to boost resilience, reduce anxiety, support positive mental health and overall, to be a friendly listening ear. To support her work, there are various cuddly toys (for when children need to be children); there are stories which might help them verbalise their worries; and there are a range of sensory materials which help calming.

Starting primary school is a very important time for you and your child, and at St. John’s we aim to make this a happy experience for everyone. Children can start school in our Reception class in the September of the academic year in which they will be five years old.
To gain a place at St. John the Evangelist, you will need to apply through Stockton-On-Tees Borough Council’s website. Please click the link for more information or scan the QR code. Alternatively, you can contact the school office. https://stjohnte.bhcet.org.uk/information/admissions
If your child is not already attending our school Nursery, they will be invited to spend some informal sessions with their new teacher and other children from the class in the summer term in order to familiarise themselves with the school environment. An information evening for our new Reception class parents is also held in the summer term.
For mid-year admissions, at other times of the year or for year groups other than Reception, please go through Stockton-On-Tees Borough Council (https://www.stockton.gov.uk/article/2543/School-transfersand-in-year-admissions). We highly recommend contacting the school in the first instance for a visit.
At St. John’s, we offer a wonderful nursery setting for three year olds. The nursery is open from 8:30am – 3:15pm (term time only) and can be a mix of both government funded hours and private payment. Please visit our website for more information.
