PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT SHELLEY FIRST SCHOOL Intent At Shelley First School we believe that physical education plays an essential part in the development of pupils in a physical, mental and moral way. We aim give to all pupils the opportunity to participate in high-quality PE and Sport, experienced in a safe and supportive manner, so that they reach their full physical and emotional potential. Our aim is to ensure pupils receive high-quality PE, which fosters a love for physical activity and promotes healthy living. We also promote opportunities for pupils to be successful in competitive sport and in physical activities. We believe that this provides pupils the opportunity to develop a number of skills, which are essential in the development of a well-rounded child. We believe that cooperation, team work and respect are important in all aspects of life. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all pupils to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach pupils skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim. Our curriculum aims to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of all pupils at Shelley First School, not only through the sport- related skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. We aspire for pupils to adopt a positive ‘Growth Mindset’ and believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience. Removing gender bias towards physical activities and sport is also a key driver in our PE curriculum.

Implementation Physical Education at Shelley First School provides challenging and enjoyable learning experiences through a range of physical and sporting activities including; invasion, net & wall, and striking games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure activities (orienteering). The long-term plan sets out the PE units (Power of PE), taught throughout the year, and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are met. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two disciplines every term. In addition, all pupils are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extracurricular activities, either in afterschool clubs or competitions provided by the SSCO for the Shelley Pyramid. We provide pupils with the opportunity to uphold British Values, including the opportunity to participate in a variety of sport. Pupils are given the freedom to make choices and every child has equal opportunity to be selected and take part in our vast array of extra-curricular activities regardless of race, religion or gender. Activity is also encouraged at playtimes with dinner ladies encouraging structured games for all pupils. Year 5 pupils are trained to become ‘play leaders’ to encourage games and sporting activities during play and lunch times. We promote the “Daily Mile”, which is used to support and encourage increased physical activity so that all pupils are active for at least 60 minutes a day. Promoting sportsmanship and participation is also a key driver and frequently shared in achievement assemblies. This allows celebrate their own and the success of others with grace, promoting respect. Our ‘Sports Day’ are an essential part of school sport and PE, giving the opportunity for pupils to participate irrespective of their ability in a whole school activity. This along with the support of parents promotes the importance of physical activity and enjoyment of those activities. We also believe that this fosters respect for all pupils within school and creates community cohesion. This year pupils in Year 4 and 5 will complete the local swimming programme in order to catch up on those who missed swimming last year and to ensure all pupils have the opportunity to learn to swim 25 metre and understand water safety before they leave school.

Impact We help motivate pupils to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our pupils learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our pupils with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
