History LTP Shelley First School. Intent At Shelley First School, we are HISTORIANS! We want our children to love and appreciate history. Our aim is that, through the teaching of History, we stimulate children’s interest, curiosity and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past. We aim to ensure that our children develop the art of being inquisitive through questioning, thinking critically, analysing & evaluating events, people and sources of evidence. We teach children a sense of chronology, in order to develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage. This enables our children to learn to value their own and other people’s cultures in modern multicultural Britain. Children will investigate significant events in British history as well as the actions of important people in history. They will be encouraged to think about how things have changed over time because of these factors. Within our History curriculum, children will consider how Britain has developed as a society, and as part of the wider world. This wider awareness leads to the children having some knowledge of historical development in the wider world, enabling them to develop perspective and judgement. We believe that by allowing the children to understand the importance and enjoyment of History through different opportunities, they will become enthused learners in History. Implementation History at Shelley First School is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each blocked topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group across the school. At the beginning of each topic, children are able to convey what they know already as well as what they would like to find out. This informs the programme of study and also ensures that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s different starting points. This is also an excellent place to identify and misconceptions that the children may have and then reference can be made to them throughout the unit so that they can be challenged and new information can be reinforced. Consideration is given to how greater depth will be taught, learnt and demonstrated within each lesson, as well as how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion. Our historians are given a variety of experiences both in and out of the classroom where appropriate to create memorable learning opportunities and to further support and develop their understanding. Impact Our History Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
