SFS Design & Technology LTP 2022-2023
Intent Design Technology at Shelley First School is an inspiring and practical subject. Our curriculum enables children to increase and develop skills and to design, create, evaluate and understand a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products. We aim to inspire our children to be engineers, designers, chefs and architects. Implementation At Shelley First School we follow the National Curriculum for Design & Technology, our long-term plan ensures skills and knowledge are taught and developed by designing, making, evaluating and increasing technical knowledge using the Sonar curriculum. Considering the planning provided teachers may adjust this to meet the needs of specific children, with added ‘projects’ where mixed age groups are taught. We deliver it as a discrete subject and, wherever possible, cross curricular links are recognised and formed. Specific vocabulary has been identified and included in planning to enable children to discuss, compare and explain Design & Technology appropriately. Impact Through Design & Technology our children develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. They build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products as well as evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others, from the past as well as from the present. Through Food Technology they understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook. The Design & Technology experiences our children engage with in school help them to develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
