HALF TERM 1

2022 - 2023

Dear members of our Trust community, Welcome back to all our students and families – and particularly those of you who have joined us this term. I hope that you have enjoyed your first half term and have settled in well to your school community. Our first half term of the school year 2022-2023 is nearly over already. All of our schools have made a really strong start to the term. Thank you to our staff for the dedication and effort that has been put in to ensure that the return to school was welcoming and well planned for all of the children and young people throughout the Trust. Our vision is to provide exceptional education for children from any background so that they become happy, confident adults with excellent academic knowledge and qualifications. We all know that the students that are in school the most get the best outcomes and that is why we expect attendance of at least 98% from all our students. Attendance is “everyone’s business” and our Trust has a clear focus on supporting the achievement of good attendance. Only through us all pulling together can we support our young people to be in school as often as possible. We have also decided to have a Trust level focus on sustainability, something of crucial importance in the current economic climate. Our schools are focusing on this with their own action plans that they have drawn up in conjunction with our children and young people. Wishing you a good half term break, Linda Jones, Chief Executive Officer Dave Bell, Executive Headteacher Andy Park, Executive Headteacher

DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE IN READING

The One Education Reading Award is a reading quality standard for schools and is the only reading quality mark in the UK that supports schools with the development of their reading curriculum. Two years ago, following One Education’s success with their Primary Reading Award, we were approached to help write, develop and pilot a new award specifically for secondary schools. We embraced this opportunity and were keen to help them develop a robust framework that was evidence-informed and that would support our trust schools to further develop our reading offer. Like the criteria used for primary schools, the Secondary Reading Award helps schools to develop their reading provision in three key areas: reading for fluency, reading for meaning and reading for pleasure. Each aspect of the framework draws upon what we know about the science of reading, guidance provided by DfE, expectations of Ofsted and the work of other literacy experts. We’re extremely proud of the rigor and depth of the framework – even One Education admit it’s probably more difficult to achieve than some of their other awards on offer! So, a massive well done to CHS South and MEA for their willingness to be guinea pigs, and for their determination in making a real success of the pilot! We are so proud that you are the first two schools in the country to have achieved this new award and look forward to seeing the wider impact on pupil outcomes across the Trust as other schools work towards their award this year. We also look forward to an exciting opportunity to develop and pilot One Education’s Special Schools Reading Award in the very near future!
