Indicator There is a clear vision for the teaching and learning of science

There is a shared understanding of the importance and value of science

There are appropriate and active goals for developing science

Observations The school has produced a set of 8 clear principles for teaching and learning of science which are the product of careful pupil voice and discussion with colleagues. The use of the principles has driven the developments of science throughout the year. It’s interesting to read that halfway through the year these were reviewed and streamlined which allowed them to be used more effectively, excellent. It is recommended that the school on the next review looks at developing their vision for science, what will science look like in 2 – 5 years? The portfolio and reflection clearly shows that science is valued across the school, this is highlighted in the final evaluation by the subject leaders, “At the start of the process, the children were bored and disinterested in Science due to its literacy heavy content. Now, children are excited and inquisitive about Science because they have been given the freedom to be practical, ask questions and investigate without strict parameters to meet specific writing objectives.” The school has presented the whole improvement plan (24 pages) which has 5 entries for the PSQM award. This definitely shows that science has been prioritised and, “for science to be a key priority in school… This has encouraged the SLT to permit the subject leader and staff to attend CPD training linked to science” it’s wonderful to read that the school has prioritised science and has empowered the subject leaders to work across the school to improve the quality and standing of science.
