English Language
COMPONENT 1 – LANGUAGE VARIATION – Section A Students will explore how language varies depending on mode, field, function and audience and how language choices can create personal identities. COMPONENT 1 – LANGUAGE CHANGE – Section B Students will explore variation in the English language from c1550 (the beginnings of Early Modern English) to the present day. NON-EXAMINATION ASSESSMENT – CRAFTING LANGUAGE Students will research a selected genre and demonstrate their skills as writers within their selected genre, crafting texts for different audiences and/or purposes. They will also reflect by writing an accompanying commentary.
English Literature
COMPONENT 2 – PROSE: BELOVED and DORIAN GRAY or The Handmaid’s Tale and Frankenstein. Students study two prose texts based around the theme of the supernatural or science and society. COMPONENT 3 – POETRY Students will study a selection of poems from two published poetry texts. They will consider the concerns and choices of modernday poets in a selection of contemporary poems. Students will apply their knowledge of poetic form, content and meaning, and develop their skills in comparing an unseen poem with an example of studied poetry. NON-EXAMINATION ASSESSMENT – COURSEWORK Students have a free choice of two texts to study. The texts will be different from those studied in the rest of the course and they will also be linked by theme, movement, author or period.
