Reception Spring 1 What’s it like in Outer Space? Exploring ‘moon buggies’, thinking about how astronauts would have to manoeuvre them around planets to collect samples.

We created our own star constellations. We used examples of different constellations in the Solar System but also tried hard to create our own. We thought about which planets our constellations would be near.

Seasons and weather: Are they the same as what we have on Earth?

We explored our own ‘space’ pens; leaving messages for other astronauts to read! We loved experimenting with the invisible ink and wondering where the message would be!

We wondered if QPootle 5 would experience the same seasons as we would, especially the frost and the snow! We researched this and found out that planets have different seasons, some are shorter than others and some only have hot and cold seasons.

Famous Astronauts We experimented and explored with different materials. We could identify which materials were sources of light, as well as which materials were magnetic and not.

We researched information about different astronauts and their roles within the Solar System. We looked at Neil Armstrong, Tim Peake and Mae Jemison. We could remember key facts and wrote lots of information about them. Mae Jemison Mae Jemison is famous for being the first Black woman to travel into space. Mae Jemison was born in 1956 in the United States of America. In 1992, she became the first Black woman to travel to space. She was on board a spacecraft called Endeavour as a mission specialist. She was in space for a total of 8 days and orbited the Earth 127 times. While she was on her mission, Mae carried out different scientific experiments.

What science experiment would you carry out if you went into space?
