Maths: Number: Multiplication and division •Multiplying up to 4 digits by 2 digits. •Dividing 4 digits by 1 digit. •Dividing with remainders Fractions • Multiplying unit, non-unit and mixed number fractions. • Calculating a fraction of a quantity and amounts.

History: This half term in history we will be focusing on the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilisations. Discovering what life was like, their Gods and their lasting effect on history.

English: This half term we will be reading the novel Oliver Twist where we will compare Victorian life to modern day life and look at the characters thoughts and feelings throughout the text. We will also look at how the author uses descriptive writing to bring the characters to life and to inspire our own writing. We will use this to write an alternative ending to Oliver Twist. We will also be looking at film and playscripts and be using drama to act out scenes.

Year 5 Spring 1: ‘Aztecs and Mayans’ Geography: We will be identifying locations in different regions in Mexico and central America. Investigating the reason why villages were built where they were and the importance of natural resources and rainforest for the survival of people and animals.

Science: This term we will be focusing on the changes between states of matter. • Compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets. • Demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes.
