A Parent’s Guide To Reading At Inskip St Peter’s Primary School we believe that it is very important for all children to develop a love of books and enthusiasm for promoting their reading skills to enable them to gain knowledge and enjoyment from reading. As a school we celebrate reading and stories every day in our classrooms, corridors, hall, library and even outdoors! As a parent you are your child’s first teacher and once your child starts school in Foundation Stage you can play a vital role in the partnership between home and school by supporting your child’s learning. The aim of this booklet is to explain how we teach reading in school and how you can help your child at home.
What we do in school … The children in our EYFS, Y1 & 2 classroom are immersed in a ‘print-rich’ environment of signs, labels, books, key words, displays and a role play area that give opportunities for reading, all of which the children are encouraged to notice and learn to read. The children have access to a wide selection of fiction and nonfiction with picture books, ‘chapter’ books, newspapers and magazines. They also choose books from our book boxes and books on display in our corridors around school and from our school library. In this way children’s enjoyment and a sense of purpose for reading is fostered. We have the Lancashire Library Service Library Van visit us every month where every child (and adult) in school is able to borrow books from a great selection and order specific books or books on a topic from the lovely Glenys. More formal teaching of reading for the Foundation Stage, Year One and Year Two children is carried out through a number of activities, as follows: Daily Phonics Teaching Page 1 of 8
