MATHS Place Value - Number to one million; counting in 10s, 100s, 1000s, 10,000s and 100,000s; compare and order numbers to one million; rounding numbers to one million; negative numbers and Roman Numerals. Addition and Subtraction - Add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, round to estimate and approximate, inverse operations. Statistics - Line graphs, tables, timetables, two way tables. Multiplication and Division - Multiples, factors (common and prime), prime numbers, square cube numbers, multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000.
FRENCH We will be learning about the buildings that you find on a typical high street and to recognise the similarities and differences between the high street at home and in France. We will learn to ask for and give basic directions, taking part in a simple conversation.
Our main focus will be about the legacy of the Maya: which inventions from Mayan times do we still use today? We will learn about ball games (Pok-a-Tok), the number system, the writing systems, the calendar, food and farming (including chocolate), Gods and religion. We will also plot the main events of the Maya onto a timeline. We will learn to use atlases and Google Maps to locate the area that the Maya lived. MUSIC Music lessons will be provided by the Oxfordshire County Music Service. The children will learn to play an instrument from the brass family.
SCIENCE Properties and changes of materials Comparing and grouping materials based on their properties Describing how a material dissolves to form a solution; explaining the process of dissolving. Describing and showing how to recover a substance from a solution. Describing and demonstrating how some materials can be separated. Reversible and irreversible changes. Giving evidenced reasons why materials should be used for specific purposes.
RE Creation - We will learn about the two stories of Creation. We will learn to recognise our God given talents and how we can use them wisely. We will also learn how to become a steward of creation. Miracles & the Sacrament of the Sick – We will recall the miracles of Jesus, learn about pilgrimage and about the Sacrament of the Sick. Advent – We will learn about the meaning of Advent and about John the Baptist’s message about the preparation for Advent. Christmas – We will revisit the Christmas Story and look deeper into the character of Herod and why he was so opposed to the birth of Jesus.
ENGLISH Fiction • We will use film to understand narrative within stories and write our own short fictional story • We will write a diary extract about the life of a Maya Pok-a-Tok player. • We will write an informal letter in response to the behaviour of a character from the book ‘Wonder’ by R.J.Palacio • We will write a sequel to a Maya folktale, ‘The Chocolate Tree.’ Poetry – based around Remembrance Day Non-Fiction • Balanced argument about whether corn or chocolate was more important to the Maya. • We will write a set of instructions about how the Maya made hot chocolate. COMPUTING We will create an e-book for our buddies in Reception Class. We will use ‘Sketch Up’ to learn how to draw buildings, including drawing a Maya temple. ART & DESIGN We will produce art work in the style of the artist Roy Lichtenstein understanding the POP art movement from the 1960s. We will learn to use sketching pencils to shade (creating mood and feeling) and to create marks and lines which produce texture. We will research how the Maya made hot chocolate. We will plan and produce packaging for hot chocolate that will appeal to a specific audience. PE Through lessons in Hockey and Football, we will learn passing, dribbling and shooting skills as well as tactics for attacking and defending by working as a team.
