Maths Our Year One journey into mastery of maths begins with sorting objects with similar features into two groups and understanding that there are many different ways to do this. We encourage observations and mathematical thinking – is there another way? And another, and another? Place Value – We begin by ordering amounts and numbers to ten and move on to comparing numbers using maths symbols. We count forwards and backwards and notice patterns and mistakes in series of numbers. Addition and subtraction within ten – We begin to manipulate numbers using tools such as the part-whole model, ten frames and the bar model. We look for the link between inverse operations and apply this – if I know that… then I know that… 3D and 2D shape – We learn to recognise different shapes from their properties and use mathematical language to describe and compare. Measurement (Length and height) – We begin to compare lengths and heights using mathematical language and measure with non-standard units of measurement. Science Materials and their properties – We learn about the materials that teddies were made from when they first came to be and what they are made from in the present day. We use the terms human-made and natural to describe these materials and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these materials. We begin to sort objects according to the materials from which they are made and plan fair tests to find the most suitable material for particular jobs, e.g. Teddy needs a new umbrella – what would be the most suitable material? We use vocabulary such as waterproof, absorbent, hard, sort, flexible, rigid, smooth, rough, transparent, opaque, translucent. We learn that objects are often made from several different materials. Space – We learn about our solar system and place the planets in the correct order. Religious Education Creation – We learn the creation story through drama, art and song. We sequence the creation story and give thanks to God, understanding that it is our duty to care for His creation. We revise the story of St Francis of Assisi. We give thanks to God for the harvest. Families & Celebrations – We describe celebrations that we have taken part in at home on in school and identify the features of celebrations and their importance in family life. We understand that Mass is an important part of God’s family life and describe what happens during a service. We learn that Jesus celebrated with his family and friends. Advent – We learn that Advent is a time of waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. We learn how the season is celebrated at home, in the parish and at school. We learn that Advent is a time of joy and participate in a special liturgy to celebrate the season. Christmas – We learn about the Annunciation, Joseph’s dream and the journey to Bethlehem. We hear about Jesus’ birth in the stable and the visitors and gifts he received. We know that the birth of Jesus continues to be important for Christians today for.
PSHE / RSHE We create our class agreement and thoughtshower how we can show respect for ourselves, our school and others. We discuss the importance of trying our best and feeling pride in our efforts. We learn what it means to be a good friend and how to care for others at work and play. We begin learning about our place in God’s family through the tenten scheme of work. We understand that we are created and loved by God and the importance of valuing ourselves as the basis for personal relationships. Computing We begin to learn about algorithms by ordering instructions for hand washing, jam sandwich making (for our teddy bear’s picnic) and soup making (for our shared Harvest feast). We learn the importance of ordering these in a specific way, which feeds into creating algorithms with ICT higher up in the school. Music We learn the history of the Teddy Bear’s Picnic song and learn to sing the song tunefully and with clear diction. We use percussion instruments to enhance our performance and keep to the beat and rhythm of the song. French We begin to learn about French culture and how to greet each other in different ways, e.g. bonjour, salut, bon soir, bon nuit. We also learn to say good bye. We learn the vocabulary for yes, no and thank you and how to say (and sing!) “Happy Birthday” and “Happy Christmas” in French.
English Phonics – In our daily phonics lessons we review, learn and apply our weekly graphemes. The children learn to recognise graphemes in isolation and to spot them in unknown words. Handwriting - We work through lowercase letters and numbers with similar patterns, ensuring correct and consistent formation. We expand to capital letters towards the end of the autumn term. Word level – We learn nouns and adjectives and apply these across the curriculum. More able writers begin to use simple conjunctions in their writing such as and, so, but, because. The children practise their Y1 common exception words for our weekly test. Sentence Level - We continue to practice writing accurate sentences across the curriculum. We begin to look at exclamations, question marks and beginning our sentences in different ways. We learn to proof read each sentence to spot errors in our writing. Reading and text Level – We enjoy a variety of stories and information texts about teddies. We learn the features of different texts and spot these in our reading. Expression, fluency and comprehension in reading is modelled through group reading sessions. We innovate the stories we have read for writing purposes and create poetry and prayers relating to our topic and R.E. curriculum. Topic (History and Geography) Our time travelling teddies begin their adventure by going back in time to Victorian Britain and experiencing a historical seaside holiday. We compare holidays now and then and use maps to locate our personal holiday destinations inside and outside of the UK. We learn about the history of the teddy bear and place events along a timeline. We learn the term ‘living memory’ and sort events that occurred inside and outside of this time bracket. We look at famous bear characters throughout time and place these along a time line. We look at the life and artwork of Alma Thomas for Black History Month. For remembrance, we learn about animals who help in times of war with a particular focus on Wojtek the bear. In our space topic we learn about the different animals that have visited space and place these along a timeline. We learn about famous astronauts from history, including the Moon landing trio, Tim Peake and Mae Jemison (Black History Month). Art and Design & Technology Art – We improve our fine motor skills by painting using pointillism in our paintings. We investigate colour mixing and create our own teddy bear pointillism paintings, based on the artwork of Alma Thomas. We manipulate clay in a variety of ways to create a teddy bear ornament. We plan and evaluate the project and then apply the skills we have learned to make an Advent wreath in December. D&T – We learn about food hygiene and how to cut food in a clean and safe way. We plan and create a healthy soup for Harvest using seasonal vegetables and share this with Year 2, who make and bring bread to the feast. Physical Education Games skills: Attacking and Defending – we learn the skills required to play a variety of team game such as passing, marking and dodging. Dance – We learn, innovate and evaluate a teddy bear themed dance. Gymnastics – We learn to move, roll and balance in a variety of ways. We copy and create short sequences.
