MATHS Place Value - Numbers to ten million, compare and order any numbers, round any number, negative numbers. Four Operations - Add and subtract integers, multiply up to a 4digit number by a 2-digit number, short division, division using factors, long division, common factors, common multiples, primes to 100, squares and cubes, order of operations, mental calculations and estimation, reason from known facts. Fractions – Simplifying fractions, fractions on a number line, comparing and ordering, adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing, finding the fraction of an amount. Converting Units – converting and calculating with metric measures, miles and kilometres, imperial measures. Ratio – ratio and scale factors RE The Story of the People of God – We will develop our knowledge and understanding of the structure of the Bible. We will study stories of significant people in the Old Testament and discover what these stories tell us about their relationship with God. Followers of Christ – We will learn about the call of the disciples by Jesus and about the demands that the call of Christ placed upon them. We will consider how people today answer the call of Christ through the life of the Church. Advent – By studying the Parables of Jesus, prayers and hymns, we will develop our knowledge about the two parts of the Season of Advent: a time to prepare for Christ to come again and a time to prepare to celebrate His birth. MUSIC During the first half term, our learning will be focused around one song: ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. We will be listening and appraising pieces of music around the theme of being happy; reading musical notation using the glockenspiels, recorders or our own instruments; playing musical instruments accurately and in time as part of a performance; improvising; and composing a melody using simple rhythms. During the second half term, our learning is focused around two tunes: ‘Bacharach Anorak’ and ‘Meet the Blues’. We will be learning to play a range of composed tunes on a musical instrument and continuing to develop our improvisation skills. Through our Christmas Carol Concert, we will perform as an ensemble and learn to use our voices with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression. We will learn to sing with good diction, in tune, sing a song with two or more parts, maintain tempo and pitch and through our overall performance, show an understanding of the context of the music. PSHE We will revise ‘Zones of Regulation’ and think about year 6 ‘Rights and Responsibilities’. We will also be embarking on an anti-bullying programme, KiVa.
WORLD WAR 2 HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY We will be learning about the main changes in a period of history: the Second World War. We will use a timeline to show these changes and the dates that significant events took place. Our studies will include learning about the axis/allies, evacuees, the Home Front, Winston Churchill, Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, the London Blitz, the Holocaust, D-Day and VE day. We will use reliable sources of evidence to describe the things people believed in the past and to describe what was important to them. We will consider how some of the things that we have studied from the past affect life today. We will also look at different versions of the same event in history and give clear reasons why there may be different accounts of history. Through Geography lessons, we will develop our locational knowledge; we will study the names and locations of different countries of the world. FRENCH We will be learning about school routines, cultural differences in school life, the names of members of the family and different occupations. We will be initiating and sustaining conversations and performing to an audience. We will develop the skills to understand the main points and simple opinions in a story, song or spoken passage. We will learn to match sounds to sentences and paragraphs and we will write sentences on a range of topics using a model. We will also read and understand the main points and some detail from a short, written passage. COMPUTING We will revise and develop our knowledge regarding internet safety through SMART rules. We will develop our coding skills through an Air Raid Warden game on the program ‘Scratch’. We will be learning to debug, peer review and improve. We will begin to prepare for our end of year Entrepreneur project by learning about profit and loss, and how to use Google Sheets.
ENGLISH Fiction: Leading on from our class text, ‘Letters from a Lighthouse’ we will write an informal letter home as an evacuee. As a contrast in style, we will also write a diary extract from the same point in time. Fictional writing based on Pie Corbett’s ‘The Tunnel’. Poetry: We will analyse a range of poems about remembrance and after visiting the local war memorial, we will write our own Remembrance Day poetry. Non-Fiction: Non-Chronological report on subject area of choice e.g. Winston Churchill, Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass), Kindertransport. Following a class debate, writing a balanced argument about whether other, more distant countries, should have become involved in WW2. RSHE We will be covering the second module from the TenTen programme, ‘Created to Love Others. This module explores the individual’s relationship with others. Building on the understanding that we have been created out of love and for love, this module explores how we take this calling into our family, friendships and relationships, and teaches strategies for developing healthy relationships & keeping safe.
ART & DESIGN Art – We will be producing a piece of mixed media art work in the style of Van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night’ and studying how the life of this artist contributed to the finished piece. We will be able to explain the style of our work and how it has been influenced by a famous artist. Design – We will learn about the ‘make do and mend’ initiatives in WWII. We will disassemble and evaluate a range of products which have been produced by combining fabric shapes and patterns, focussing on their construction. We will revisit our sewing skills from previous year groups, making seams and tacking fabrics together. We will practise making 2D patterns using grid or tracing paper to create a mock up before we design and make a product using recycled fabric.
SCIENCE Electricity – We will focus on key historical discoveries in electricity, such as Thomas Edison (who invented the light bulb) and their impact on our lives today. We will learn to recognise the universal symbols for electrical components and use them to draw clear and accurate simple circuit diagrams. We will also learn about the effect of cell voltage on circuit components and carry out investigations to explore the impact e.g. investigating the relationship between wire length and bulb brightness/buzzer loudness. Light – We will learn about how light travels in a straight line and how the reflection of light enables us to see objects. We will investigate the law of reflection, using mirrors and explore how shadows change in size, shape and direction depending on the position and distance of the light source. We will find out about the work of Isaac Newton’s ‘Theory of Colour’ and how this led to the scientific recognition of the ‘visible spectrum’ of colours.
PE Through lessons in football and hockey, we will learn to play to agreed rules, explain the rules and take turns to umpire. We will also learn how to make plans and communicate them to lead a team. In dance, we will study the dances brought to the UK by the African American soldiers such as the Jive and the Jitterbug. We will learn to develop our own sequences in a specific style. In swimming, we will be improving our technique for all four swimming strokes over 25 metre and learning to perform safe selfrescue in different water-based situations.
