The reason we have the illuminations as we know them, are because of a man called Charles Furness, the Tramways and Electrical Engineer.
The illuminations were put up to celebrate a visit from Princess Louise in 1912 who was here to open a new section of the Promenade!
Louise visited in May and the lights were so popular that they were put up again in September.
