1933: Adolf Hitler led political party in Germany - National Socialists or Nazis. He armed Germany and seized land from other countries. 1939 - Germans invaded Poland. 1939 - Prime Minister of Britain (Neville Chamberlain) declared war on Germany because Hitler refused to abort his invasion in Poland. World War 2: 1939 - 1945.
Anderson Shelter - These shelters were half buried in the ground with earth heaped on top to protect them from bomb blasts. They were made from six corrugated iron sheets bolted together at the top, with steel plates at either end, and measured 6ft 6in by 4ft 6in (1.95m by 1.35m). The entrance was protected by a steel shield and an earthen blast wall. Design and make Design stage should include: step-by-step plan, annotated sketches, listing tools & materials. consider the most appropriate materials for your frame structure, considering a number of properties (e.g. weight, toughness, malleability, strength and presentation) A joining process is the way in which materials are joined together for a specific purpose.
It was fought between two main powers: Axis (Germany, Italy and Japan) Allies (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States of America, the Soviet Union and China). World War II involved 61 countries with 1.7 billion people (three quarters of the world’s population). 8th May 1945, the axis power surrendered. VE day is celebrated in Europe to mark this victory. Japan did not surrender to the allies until the 15th August 1945. Evacuation The British government was worried that a new war might begin when Hitler came into power in 1933. They were afraid that British cities and towns would be targets for bombing raids by aircraft. Evacuation tried to ensure the safety of young children from the cities that were considered to be in danger of German bombing (London, Coventry, Birmingham, Portsmouth). Nearly 2 million children were evacuated from their homes. Concentration camps Maintained by the Nazis- camps were made after Hitler became Prime Minister. Camps held undesirables - Jews - used to kill them in gas chambers. Not enough food- worked too hard. Propaganda - used by the Germans to make the camps look like nice places to be. Blitz 7th September 1940, German Air Force, the Luftwaffe, launched a massive raid on London. Over 350 bombers flew across the Channel from airfields in France and dropped 300 tonnes of bombs on the docks and streets of the East End of London.
Triangulation can help make a structure stronger. This is important to consider when creating stable joists. Triangulation is important when supporting the structure. When force is applied to one point on the triangle the pressure is shared amongst the other two points which provide a secure wide base. Creating a rigid frame requires creations of secure joists. Materials Using Straw/Rolled Paper When using straw, rolled paper, a number of adhesives can be used e.g. sellotape/ different types of glue. However, these structures are not as strong/ stable as wooden structures.
Outcome: Create a prototype of a shelter to protect a family during an enemy attack.
