This is a result of gravity.  Centrifugal force: a force created during a spin that pulls from the centre of the object.  The Earth rotates in an anti-clockwise direction on its axis (an imaginary pole through the centre of the Earth)  When the Earth rotates away from the Sun, it becomes night and when the Earth rotates towards the Sun, it becomes day  It takes the Earth 24 hours to complete one full rotation  The Earth has 24 different time zones – one for each hour of the day  The Earth’s orbit around the Sun is how we measure days, months and years  Earth takes 24 hours to complete a full rotation (responsible for day and night) and 365.25 days to orbit the Sun (responsible for the seasons)  It takes about a month (28 days) for the Moon orbit the Earth  The Sun is a star (a ball of gas) and is the centre of our Solar System  The Earth is one of 8 planets in the solar system – all of which orbit the Sun (heliocentric model).  The order of planets from closest to farthest from the sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune  Each planet takes a different amount of time to orbit the Sun  The Earth takes 365.25 days to orbit

Declarative Knowledge – History  Space Age began - October 4, 1957 launch of Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union. First man made satellite, orbiting the Earth in 98.1 minutes and weighing 83 kg (183 lb).  28th May 1959 first creature returns alive from space. Two monkeys were launched into space on a Jupiter missile.  12th April 1961- The first man in space. USSR sent Yuri Gagarin into space from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, in a Vostok spacecraft. He made a single orbit of Earth in 108 minutes, travelling at more than 17,000 miles per hour.  16th June 1963- the first woman in space. Valentina Tereshkova, a former textile worker, became the first woman to be launched into space by the Soviet Union.  18th March 1965 - first ever space walk. Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov - from the two-man Voskhod spacecraft. Leonov's suit expanded minutes after stepping into space due to the zero-pressure conditions  20th July 1960- First man on the moon - American Neil Armstrong – Apollo 11  19th April 1971- the first space station is launched. Russia launched Salyut, The first crew to dock with the orbiting outpost later die during re-entry when the air leaks out of their Soyuz capsule.  7th February 1984- free flying in space. Bruce McCandless became the first person to do a spacewalk without being attached to the spacecraft. He tested a manned manoeuvring unit, which allowed him to travel away from the orbiter, during a 90minute spacewalk.  In the United States, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 28th Jan 1986 resulted in a significant decline in manned Shuttle launches. NASA grounded all Shuttles for safety concerns until 1988. 1990s funding for space-related programs fell sharply
