Employer Project

The South Cheshire Society of Model engineers is a Registered Company limited by Guarantee. It was incorporated in 1996.

Specification:

1. The list bridges must be easy to lift up and stay up to allow access.

2. When lowering back to the track, the alignment of the rails must be within 0.2mm

The membership, currently over 80 members, who elect a committee to run the club for them. We have been at our current site for over 25 years and have been constantly developing it. We offer rides to the public, under our brand of “The Peacock Railway” which can be found on Facebook. The club owns 2 steam and 2 diesel ( electric powered) locos where members can learn to drive and also maintain them.

3. The bridges will be sited outside, so must be weatherproof and long lasting

4. There will be 2 bridges needed, so different designs for each could be researched.

5. Must easily be linked into our current design for the track base.

The whole tracksite is maintained my the members.

Project Brief:

The club is expanding its activities and building a gauge 1 (45mm) railway. This is in addition to the 2.5”, 3.5” and 5” railway were currently use. The idea if building this new railway is to attract newer members to the club, as this gauge needs model engineering skills, and as we all get older, the smaller locomotive actually appeals.

6. It must be safe to use and operate.

Project Outcome(s) and Deadline:

The club would like to see 2 or 3 designs and full dimensional data.

List of materials to be detailed.

Presentation given firstly to the committee, then perhaps to the club.

If Crewe UTC could add construction to the project, that would be a real benefit to all.

The track, currently under construction, which is being built in a “dog bone” format, will require 2 lift bridges to allow access into the inside of the circles to allow maintenance and grass cutting.

As the building work for the track has not reached the stage of exactly where the bridges, dimensionally, will go, the deadline will depend on us. We have a provisional date of January to March 2024 for the bridges to be designed and constructed.

Additional Project Information: The Peacock Railway Track

These images show the track layout, you will notice the track is ‘table high’ and placed upon solid/flat surface tiles. Your design must allow these ‘tiles’ and track to lift so that the workers can access the centre.
