Viewing platform railings

Employer Project

Employer Information:

The Crewe Heritage Centre is nestled between the Crewe-Chester and West Coast Mainline on the site of the original Crewe Locomotive Works. It was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, on 24th July 1987 to mark the 150th anniversary of the first train to arrive at Crewe Railway Station in 1837.

The popularity of the Heritage Centre grew, attracting visitors from all over the United Kingdom and even the world. In 1989 the council handed the running of the museum over to the newly formed Crewe Heritage Trust, who continue to operate the museum to this day

Specification:

1. Must keep visitors safe, the design must be durable and strong enough to allow visitors to lean against it.

2. It must have features that enable visitors to photograph passing trains (see photos for how it is currently done)

3. It must have no sharp edges.

4. It must be 2m in height to protect from tracks below and the electricity pylons above.

5. It must reflect the style and design of Crewe Heritage Centre.

Project Brief:

The viewing platform, next to the Signal Box at Crewe Heritage Centre, needs the safety railings updating (see photos). The current design has become worn over time and is now in need of an update. You must engineer a new safe solution, that allows visitors to photograph passing trains, whilst at the same time, keeping them safe and not a risk of the tracks below and electricity pylon above.

6. It must be suitable to be mounted onto the current viewing platform.

Project Outcome(s) and Deadline:

2 x Client Research Sheets

3 x Design Idea Sheets

1 x Final Design Sheet – with dimensions

Prototype of final design (CAD or Physical scale model)

5 minute presentation to Employers

Deadline: TBC

Employer Project

Additional Project Information: The current railings have deteriorated over time, the new design needs to be safe, but also aesthetically pleasing to look at. It must allow visitors to view the railway – see below what the current solution is.

Arm Rests for Intercity APT

1. Must be safe and robust (visitor proof!) so it must have Health & Safety considerations in its design.

2. It must fit onto the existing arm rests.

3. The material must be durable and comfortable.

4. It fit in with the style ‘Aesthetic’ of the Intercity APT.

5. It must be simple to attach onto the existing arm rest

6. It cannot have any sharp edges

Project Brief:

A vintage ‘Intercity APT’ at the Heritage Centre is open to the public to visit and explore. Over time, the arm rests on some of the seating has become worn and damaged (see photos). You are required to engineer a solution to this problem, by designing a protective ‘case’ to stop the arm rests becoming more damaged over time .

7. Batch production must be considered in the design –approx. 200 will be needed.

Project Outcome(s) and Deadline:

2 x Client Research Sheets 3 x Design Idea Sheets

1 x Final Design Sheet – with dimensions

Prototype of final design (CAD or Physical scale model)

5 minute presentation to Employers

Deadline: TBC

Employer Project

Additional Project Information: Existing Problem with the arm rests – you can see the current design is made from foam, so it is soft and over time has worn away/ripped. You solution needs to protect the foam and/or be a more durable alternative.
