Maths: This half-term, the children will work on a range of mathematical areas. They start on decimals and percentages, learning equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages, how to round, compare and order them. They will then explore the topic of Area and Perimeter, where they will learn how to find both relating to rectangles, rectilinear shapes, compound shapes and polygons. Statistics will be the last unit of work before Easter: they will practise drawing and reading line graphs, and interpreting tables/timetables. Science: This half-term in Science, children will revisit Properties and Changes of Materials, exploring reversible and irreversible changes through hands-on investigations. They will then apply their learning in a thermal insulator challenge, designing and creating a cup using the most effective material to keep liquids warm. This practical activity will develop their scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills
Year 5 – Spring 2
English: Over the next six weeks, the children will be reading a range of Ancient Greek myths and legends. They will be exploring the features of persuasive texts and writing their own persuasive texts, linked to the Ancient Greeks. They will also attempt to write some incredibly realistic setting descriptions. The children will be learning how to use causal conjunctions, apostrophes for possession, subjunctive verbs, colons to link related clauses, similes, metaphors and personification too.
History: For our next History topic of Year 5, the children will be learning all about Ancient Greece! They will be exploring the civilisation of the Ancient Greeks. They will compare similarities and differences between Athens and Sparta, before learning about the famous wars and battles of the time. They will learn all about the Greek Gods! We will also have a full experience day from a fabulous company called, ‘The Past Presents’.
