English: We will be focusing on the text ‘Lila and the Secret of the Rain’ by David Conway and Jude Daly. We will be looking at setting descriptions and writing our own version of the story. We will be teaching the children the difference between present and past tenses, subordinating and coordinating conjunctions and how to use apostrophes. We will end the term by creating explanation texts linked to our Science knowledge of plants. We will be looking at how different non-fiction texts are structured and then look closely at features and new vocabulary.
Maths: This half term we will be continuing our learning in measurements, focusing on mass, capacity and temperature. Children will learn how to compare the mass of two or more objects and use the language “heavier” and “lighter” alongside the inequality symbols to compare mass. Children will learn the difference between volume and capacity and will be introduced to temperature, thermometers and the unit “degrees Celsius”, written °C, for the first time.
Year 2 – Spring Art & Design: Craft and design: Map it out. This unit focuses on teaching children to explore and create maps through various art forms including drawing, felt making, printmaking and designing stained glass.
Science: We will be learning all about plants. This will include keeping a growth chart of how plants grow from bulbs and seeds. Our learning will focus on the life processes of plants and during our visit to Botanic Gardens we will look at different types of plants and trees.
