we feel valued, learn how to mend friendships, and create meaningful connections by being respectful to all

Reading and Phonics

We use Read Write Inc Phonics, to support with the development of reading and writing at Churchtown.

Children will have a daily Phonics

lesson, with a member of staff.

Within this session, children will learn new sounds, before attempting to read a variety of real and alien words containing the focus sounds!

Reading

One of our key priorities in KS1 is developing READING.

We strongly believe reading underpins our children’s successes across the curriculum. The requirement of all children is to read at least three times per week at home.

If your child is on RWI books, 2 books will be issued every Friday. When your child has completed RWI they can change their books once they have completed them.

Each child will be issued with a reading record for parents to record their child’s reading each week. This will be checked in school regularly.

Reading

We

will also upload weekly video links to Seesaw, which match your child’s learning in school that week.

Forest School

This year we have been able to fund extra Forest School sessions so that more year groups can benefit from them. This will include KS1 classes, starting with Year 2, and with Year 1 later in the year.

Permissions for this have been sent via the Arbour app, and you will receive further communication as your child’s sessions come closer.

Mr Cocks will check our records for allergies, but if you wish to give any further information you can email office@churchtown.org.uk FAO Mr Cocks closer to the time.

Forest School

What is Forest School?

Forest School is a child-centred learning approach that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions in a natural setting. It supports play, exploration, and supported risk-taking, allowing children to develop confidence, independence, and a deeper connection with the natural world.

It takes place on the school field, where we have been developing a wilder and more natural area especially for this purpose.

Forest School

To simplify things the whole class will wear field kit on their Forest School, day.

In addition, children need to be prepared for being outside whatever the weather, and will need a waterproof coat, plus a warm hat in cold weather. They will also need appropriate shoes, and a change of clothing. (These do not need to be ‘uniform’ but must be something that the children can change into independently. Please no laces unless the children can tie them themselves.)

In Summary:

• whole class wear field kit

• waterproof coat, plus hat etc. for cold weather

• change of clothes, especially socks and joggers, in a clearly labelled bag (carrier bags are fine)

• change of footwear (wellies or old trainers/shoes to wear on the field – no laces)

Homework

In addition to weekly reading, homework is set at the start of each half-term, where children are given a selection of activities to complete. There will be around 10 activities available on the ‘menu’ with children expected to complete one per week during the half term. Homework will then all be collected in at the end of the week and celebrated in class by the children and their peers.

Proposed Educational Visits

In Year 2, we hope to visit Blackpool Zoo during the Summer 2 term to enrich our Science curriculum.

(Special Educational needs and disabilities)

If you have any concerns about your child’s progress or well-being, the first point of call will always be to talk to the class teacher.

From this point, it may be that further provision is required, which the class teacher will organise and implement.

After this period of time, if there are still concerns, the SEND team (Mrs Tudor and Mrs Sutton) are always there to support and offer guidance for the children.

Uniform

Children can wear summer uniform or winter uniform in September, but Winter uniform starts officially after October half term. Please ensure that all white shirts are tucked in.

Winter Uniform:

Churchtown Primary School V-neck jumper or cardigan

Grey long trousers

Grey skirt or Grey pinafore dress

White, plain shirt, suitable for school tie

Black, flat school shoes (No Boots)

Grey socks or grey tights

School bookbag with logo

Summer Uniform:

Grey shorts with yellow, plain or logo polo shirts.

Yellow and white gingham dress or grey skirt with yellow, plain or logo polo shirts and white socks

Please put your child’s name in all of their uniform!

At Churchtown, we use the app SeeSaw to offer a window into the classroom.

Staff in school use SeeSaw to journal the children’s learning and parents have the opportunity to access their child’s individual portfolio.

Your child will have already been transferred into their new class, so you will already be able to view their learning journey so far! Please remember the Code of Conduct which you signed when allowing access to SeeSaw last academic year, regarding the use of these images. If you wish to see this again, please ask at the school office.

Behaviour on the playground

• We can’t use the climbing equipment before the start of the school day

• Think – is there enough room for me or do I need to wait my turn?

• Only climb on things that designed to be climbed on

• Use kind hands

• Use kind words

• Respect the equipment - we want to make sure the equipment is well looked after so we can all enjoy the playground for a long time to come!
