Newsletter – 21st March 2022 Our News Last week our new physical development play area was opened by our PE governor Mr Cadwallader. The children have all been so excited to play and learn on it. Our Year 6 Sports’ Captains have been helping them out at lunchtimes until they gain more confidence with moving along it. Last week, we enjoyed our school science week, learning all about the theme of growth. It was perfect timing that in this very week, the frogs in our garden had laid their frogspawn in our ‘pond.’ Each child has brought home some sunflower seeds to plant and grow. We will be having a competition in the summer term to see whose sunflower is the tallest.

STARS OF THE WEEK Araiya and Ruby C from Yellow Ducklings Luna and Jack from Brown Ducklings Our Learning The children have been exploring different aspects of growth during science week, including the plants and animals in the changing seasons and the locality around them. They have joined with in with a nationwide live lesson about the growth of plastic pollution in the world. During this lesson they listened to some scientists called The3Engineers read their story, ‘Stop throwing Litter!’ and what they can do to help this problem. The books and other resources are online for you to view - https://www.the3engineers.com/books They also watched another live lesson called ‘Fantastic Minibeasts and where to find them by the National Farming Union. This taught them about the important job that minibeasts do to help our farmers and the habitats that they might find them in. This inspired the children to go looking for minibeasts outside in different places. The children enjoyed growing their own cress seeds and caring for them. They explored and found out whether all seeds are the same. Ask them to tell you what they found out? They have set up their own little investigation in the classroom to find out if all seeds take the same amount of time to grow. Each finger of our ‘greenhouse’ glove has a different type of seed planted in it. Over the next few weeks, ask them to tell you what they have found out! They explored different objects to see if they might be from a tree and then went on a welly walk to explore the different trees on our school field. The children have begun to use new vocabulary such as microhabitat, deciduous and evergreen. The children were intrigued to talk about questions such as, ‘Is the tallest person in the class, the oldest?’ and ‘Can the person with the biggest hands hold more?’ They thought of different ways in which they could find out the answers to these questions. A big ‘thank you’ to Grayson’s daddy, who sent in a video for us to watch, all about his special job as an engineer. The children loved looking at the different machines and artefacts that were sent in.
