Welcome to Year 5! I hope you all had a lovely summer and I look forward to working with you and your child to ensure we have a happy and successful year. Curriculum this half-term  Our main theme for the first half-term will be: ‘To Infinity and Beyond!’ Along with space and creating our own Space Art, we will be studying different Legends. We will be wearing our writing hats and constructing our own Legend!  In Maths, we will be working on our understanding of place value, reading and writing numbers to 1000000, addition, subtraction, division and of course, multiplication.  In R.E, we will be learning about why we read the bible and other religious books. We will also have R.E day on 28th September.  Our Science topic will be ‘SPACE’. You can expect to be told the order of the planets, why we have night and day and of course proof that the earth is spherical (not flat).  In Spanish, we will predominantly learn ‘I have’ Phrases and ‘I do not have’ Phrases, hybridised with items in the classroom.  More details about our curriculum can be found on the ‘Tiger’s Class’ page on the school website . 

Support in class In class we are lucky enough to have full time support from the wonderfully experienced and enthusiastic Mrs Hulme.

P.E Our P.E sessions will be on Wednesday 10am. One session each week will be taught by a specialist coach.  Please ensure children have their P.E kit in for all P.E sessions.  Parents must provide a note / speak to school if their child is unable to do P.E, otherwise children will be expected to join in.  Please provide children with plasters if they are unable to remove earrings. 

Homework  Additional tasks may include spellings, times tables, reading and handwriting tasks, etc. Swimming  Y5 will be taken swimming by Mrs Warrington on Fridays 9am and will return to school by 11am

Reading Children will have a 30 minute reading session each day and will have opportunities to read with the class teacher each week. Children have a Bug Club log in, where they can access books at their level. Please try to encourage your child to read at home at least 3+ times each week and ensure they have their reading book each day. Progress can be tracked by the class teacher online. It is important for your child’s comprehension skills that they read books more than once.

School Website  Our class webpage will be regularly updated throughout each half term so you can see all the exciting things your child has been learning.

If you have any concerns about your child’s time at school, please make an appointment to discuss this as soon as possible. Many thanks for your support, Mr Critchley & Missj Hulme
