Autumn Term Where do we live and who lives there? Children know and identify special places. Children develop a sense of belonging to a family, school, community and the wider world. Children begin to understand belonging to a religious community.  Discuss where we live.  Describe features of their house & state address.  Name places that are special to them.  Talk about belonging to their family and say who lives in their house.  Notice differences and similarities between different homes.  Ask questions about special places. Vocabulary: home, family, school, community, church What can we see in our wonderful world? (Harvest) Children understand nature during different seasons.

Who and what are special to us? Children begin to learn about themselves, recognising that we are all different but unique and special. Children begin to explore the concept of ‘special’ in relation to the Christianity and Islam.  Talk about what makes them unique.  Notice the visual and personalities of others.  Talk about special achievements.  Talk about people who are important to them  Talk in simple terms about some of the roles people have and jobs they might like to do.  Listen carefully and retell important stories. Vocabulary: home, family, job, important, special, bible. What can we see in our wonderful world? (Easter) Children begin to know Christian beliefs about creation. Children develop ideas about looking after the world. Children begin to reflect on concepts death and new life.

How are special times celebrated? Children explore festivals and how they are celebrated. Children develop a basic understanding of religious festivals through the year, including Christmas, Diwali & Eid. Children identify religious aspects and cultural traditions.  Talk about celebrations and begin to notice the celebrations which are important to others.  Talk about how they celebrate their birthday.  Listen to and retell the Christmas story.  Talk about how Christians celebrate Christmas.  Talk about celebrations which include light, music and dancing.  Listen carefully to a story which is important to Hindus/Sikhs/Muslims.  Experience celebration through music and dance.
