Below Left: Class of 2017 President Clarke Patrone has been named a Presidential Scholar by the U.S. Department of Education. Of more than 3.5 million high school seniors, 161 students were chosen from across the nation - and only two from Louisiana - as Presidential Scholars, one of the top honors a graduating senior can receive. Clarke traveled this summer with the U.S.-China Student Leaders Exchange, an annual initiative that sends 12 nationally recognized recent American high school graduates to China for a two-week immersion program to learn about the country’s successes and challenges.

Right: The ESA faculty chose Tracey Dibbs as the 2017 Headmaster’s Award recipient after watching Tracey steer the school as President of the Student Council, lead the tennis team and earn a spot in the State semifinals, and balance academic excellence with service to ESA and to the greater community. Thank you, Tracey!

Finding a Rhythm at ESA Whether it’s a song at Coffeehouse, a sixth grade chapel performance, a drumline ensemble at a basketball game, or a musical band number, music teacher Bill Smith plays a supporting role that gives his students the confidence to perform at their best. With a career that has taken him around the country and across the world to perform, write and record, Bill has discovered that ESA is a fulfilling place to settle down. Originally from southeastern Ohio, Bill studied music therapy at Tennessee Tech before changing course and moving to Asheville, North Carolina, where he earned a B.A. in jazz performance from Brevard College. While in North Carolina, he taught African drumming, instructed drumlines and directed percussion ensembles for middle and high school students as an adjunct teacher. In 2005, Bill moved to Los Angeles, where he served as a middle school band director, taught music privately at the Rock School of Los Angeles, and played professionally. As a percussionist, he recorded with Peter Rowan, Alex Ebert, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and others. As the drummer and one of the lead singers of Truth & Salvage Co., Bill toured with The Black Crowes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Miller Band, The Avett Brothers and The Lumineers. His band traveled to Iraq to play for U.S. troops stationed there.

7th grade chapel performance

Bill’s music career took him to Nashville in 2012, where he played music and wrote songs for various artists. Some of his songs have been featured on the CMT website’s up-and-coming artists page. In 2014, Bill moved to Lafayette with his wife Monti – a Carencro native – and daughter Charlie. He found a home at ESA, and has spent the past two school years shaping the Cade campus music program. While he plays guitar and piano, Bill is primarily a percussionist. He uses instruments such as the drums, marimba and xylophone to engage the students quickly. In teaching rhythm, melody and harmony – the basic elements of music – Bill says learning is instantaneous with percussion instruments. He encourages students to play all of the instruments in his classroom, and continually adds to the collection. This year he is bringing in additional ukuleles as a predecessor to guitar. continued on page 8

“We use songs they like and that they listen to for teaching the basic elements. I develop the curriculum based on the personality of the class and the students’ needs.”

I get to share my experiences and what I know. I get as much satisfaction from watching my kids play as I did playing myself. - Bill Smith, ESA Music

6th grade chapel performance

The Cade campus music curriculum begins in middle school with short quarter-long courses in sixth and seventh grade and Music I in eighth grade. Students study the history of popular music, from the beginning of the 20th century to today. They examine modern songs for the basic elements and relate them to the music history they’ve studied. The students present songs to the class as options, and eventually the group chooses one to perform, usually in chapel. (View videos of some of the performances at vimeo. com/esacadiana.) In upper school, students enroll in either beginning or advanced Music II. “I see music as an outlet to help students with academics without making it too academic itself. It feeds their passions,” Bill says. At the same time, there are certain things he won’t overlook – like reading music, something he has worked on with his upper school musicians. He has seen the students grow as live musicians as well, and works with them on stage presence, understanding their instruments and communicating together on stage. With the exception of Sean Morrow, ’17, who is attending Berklee School of Music, the advanced musicians will all be back on the ESA stage this fall. Bill has enjoyed seeing them take their instruments more seriously and find success beyond Cade. At the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest music festival in Oklahoma last spring, ESA’s rock band impressed the stage managers, who told Bill ESA had one of the best bands they’ve seen in a long time.

Drumline at ESA Summer

Thanks to the Nails family, owners of Dockside Studios, middle and upper schoolers are learning what it takes to be studio musicians as well as live performers. A highlight of the program, the Dockside sessions have immersed the students in an environment that has seen an incredible range of talented musicians. “My goal with the recording sessions is to teach them work ethic, professionality and what goes into being a studio musician,” Bill explains. (Listen to recordings from the sessions at ESAcadiana.com/Music.)

Where studio recording is familiar to Bill, some of the aspects of musical theater are not. He had experience as an instrumentalist in theatrical productions, but not in acting or directing. Yet his work with Performing Arts Chair Kat Movassaghi on the school’s musical productions has deepened the music theatre experience, and Bill has managed to quickly make a mark on the program. For the first time in ESA history, a full student band performed the music for last year’s musical production, The Wedding Singer. Another expansion – a drumline – adds spirit and noise to basketball games and pep rallies. The group traveled to the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans to support the Falcons last year. A session of drumline camp during ESA Summer brought together some of last year’s drummers with new musicians hoping to join in. There’s no doubt ESA Music is thriving under Bill’s influence. At the same time, Bill sees the program as a great fit for this stage in his career. “I get to share my experiences and what I know. I get as much satisfaction from watching my kids play as I did playing myself.”

At Home in the EC As soon as we opened the doors to the new Lafayette Campus Enrichment Center in January, students and teachers began putting the space to use:

• For the Lower School musical, Annie, Jr., (middle row left), dedicated space in the EC made everything from rehearsals to set design easier.

• Dr. Baker (above) welcomed guests for Grandparents Day.

• The large chapel space (center) provides a home for presentations by students, teachers and guests. Each month we celebrate the Eucharist with area priests, such as The Rev. John Bedingfield (bottom right).

• ESA artists displayed their creations for the Lower School Arts Showcase (right). • Upper School Garden Club members coordinated a hunger banquet for fourth graders (top left) to educate them about poverty, food scarcity and what it feels like when some have and some don’t. • Fifth graders (top right) dissected sheep hearts in the science lab with the help of ESA parents Dr. Chris Lawrence and Dr. Phil Gachassin.

• Fourth graders performed La belle et la bête in the French classroom (middle right) for parents and guests. • In the library (bottom left), the Sense of Our Place enrichment cluster interviewed Dr. Baker about the history of the LAFCO Boats building and the decisions that went into creating the EC.

A Repeat and a Three-Peat! Five ESA athletes scored 111 points to win the 2017 Class B Girls’ Track & Field State Championship - ESA’s second in a row! Results include: Samantha Withers, 1st, 800m, 1st, 1600m, 2nd, 3200m; Aline Malek, 2nd, 1600m, 1st, 3200m; Breigh Rodriguez, 2nd, 800m; Hailie Williams, 4th, 100m hurdles, 2nd, 300m hurdles, 3rd, high jump; Kailie Williams, 1st, 100m, 2nd, 200m, 1st, 400m; 4x400m relay (Sam, Kailie, Aline and Breigh), 1st. ESA Golf won the Division IV State Championship for the third consecutive year! Oliver Nickel, who shot rounds of 73 and 71, placed 3rd in the tournament. Earning the 2017 victory were (from left) Coach Stephen Nickel, Oliver, Ethan Thibodeaux, Jacob Billeaud, Alex Billeaud and Ben Adams. Congratulations, Falcons!

The jurors were unable to select just one student to receive top honors in the exhibit. They chose Carter Broussard (whose photographs are on the cover and on page 5) and Tana Gauthier, who works in both 2D and in large-scale ceramics (above). Of Carter and Tana, the judges wrote: What really stood out with these two is their individual vision and their ability to recognize ‘mistakes’ and turn them into great successes. What also appealed to us was the sophisticated manner in which they addressed their work and the concepts underlying it, and the professional manner in which they made choices and articulated them as they presented their work.” Read more about ESA’s artists at ESAcadiana.com/VisualArts.

Sidney Hebert Athletes of the Year ESA Athletics dominated in 2016-2017. Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country, Girls’ Track & Field, and Golf all took home State Championships. The Boys’ Soccer team made it to the State finals, and both the Baseball and Basketball teams reached the semifinals. ESA coaches honored three athletes who competed on multiple teams and led their teammates to personal and team successes. Mason Shuffler, ’17, top left, and Cole McKay, ’17, right, played both Baseball and Basketball in 2016-2017. Mason is an All-District and All-State Pitcher and was invited to play in the 2017 All-Star game. Four-year starters in Basketball, both Cole and Mason scored over 1,000 points in their senior year. Cole was named to the All-District, All-Teche and All-Acadiana teams and received Honorable Mention on the All-State team. Samantha Withers, ’19, top right, won her second individual cross country state championship, and led the Falcons to championships in Cross Country and Track & Field. As a starter on the Girls’ Soccer team, she helped the team reach the second round of the playoffs.
